The dying plants...? It'll be damn hard to tell you what they are. They were dried out black coloured plants, with black dead leaves.

Anyways gentlemen, I can almost assure you that it is the Mycena... it looks exactly like what I picked today.

Here is the corrected image of the one above posted just recently by Spiritus.

I corrected it in photoshop and the gills are chocolate brown.

They do look like cold-weather beaten liberty caps which have suffered from cold weather and rainy weather combined. Just not healthy

well, i still think they are mycenas, i just dont see the chocolate brown gills, they look white as the driven snow no matter how much you photoshop it, and growing from dead leafy plants a opposed to clump of sage grass or at least dense grass is another reason,
plus the stirations as i mentioned earlier are not the same as p. semi.  also the lack of a separable pellicle (you can tell just by looking at these ones)
if you could get a spore print, possibly 2 on black and white paper, that should settle it beyond doubt.  i say it will leave a white deposit, if im wrong on that accound then i will aggree. :smile:

Okay, some more information to help you guys figure out what this REALLY is...

This weekend (when I picked the shrooms), it was very cold, however on Saturday it was more on the rainy wet mildish cold type of thing, and on Sunday the shrooms were covered in a light coat of frost which made them easy to pick out.

They were not growing directly near the plants. Speaking of the plants, you can view them here:

That is approximatly 10% of the plant, from the top.

They were growing in the mossy type ground AROUND the plants. The plants offered some type of protection to the mushrooms, as well as condensing moisture in one area and protecting it from sunlight.

They seemed concentrated around grasses aswell as I discovered on my second hunt. Not directly in the grasses, moreso under them. They almost grew in the grass, but moreso just under the shade of the grass...

Sporeprint? Possible, but difficult as I have put them in a trash bag and it's sitting in my garage now. However, I still have approximatly 100 dry specimens I haven't thrown out yet. Is it possible to sporeprint those? I am really hoping they aren't liberty caps now... should I go retrieve them before it's too late?

Mushroom John seems to know his shit, and I've even seen a picture of him holding liberty caps... and he seems to be pretty sure that these are liberty caps.

However, Mitchnast also knows his shit and is also experianced at hunting mushrooms like liberty caps, and is set on these not being liberty caps.

It seems the only soloution to this problem would be to take them. Doing so would be risking poisoning. However, I've eaten one while hunting to see what it tasted like (I was set on them being libs), and experianced no adverse effects. I've also read on a site that they are not edible for the reason they are too small. Perhaps they are harmless?

Jeeze. I am racked. I hope I didn't just throw out like 120 liberty caps!

well the plant you posted is goldenrod, liberty caps aren't known to grow with goldenrods, same with moss, although its possible, but highly unlikely. the particular speceis of mycenas i mentioned however are most commonly found in such environments. mossy ground, in low brush.

a fresh specimine would be required for a sporeprint.

I'm not expert but think that some of those have too white gills to be Psilocybe Semilanceatas. You propably have mixed set of few different shrooms.

Well if it help to get another opinion on this, I would have to say with confidence that what you have are not Libs.  Now i would have to agree with Mitchnast's ID.  Those are Mycenas.  I do not see chocolate colored gills.  The striations on the caps are just screaming mycenas.  But to make this ID 100% you need to get some fresh specimins and take some sporeprints on half white, half black paper.  Since you said that the weather was moist, then the caps should have a slimy pellicle if it is a lib.  Try and peel the top layer of the cap at the rim to determine wheather is has one or not.
But like i said i am confident in Mitchnast's ID that they are Mycenas.  I hope i have helped you in any way.  Best of luck to you. :thumbup:

kind of a late bump but i'd like to reaffirm the fact that they Mycenas.

i wish i had a quarter for the times i've picked them up thinking they were libs then seeing that underside and getting pissed. they are rampant all over my little patch here in Corner Brook.

by the way, the season has pretty much come to a halt here on the island since we had that really cold week eh? i haven't bothered to go take a look cause i'm just assuming they are all in mushroom heaven.

The good times are over? but I actually found two shrooms yesterday when I was out for a stroll. Before that the last time was over two weeks ago. So its not impossible to find a few late bloomers.

The weather this past week has actually been perfect for shrooms. If it weren?t for that one cold week we?d be laughin. Maybe if I get a chance this weekend I?ll get some pics or wait until Monday so I can say I picked shrooms in December to add to my coolness.

There's a yellowing there I wouldn't trust,could be the light though..but if they ARE yellowed with those striations nope.Yeah and I've seen lookalikes RIGHT NEXT to liberty caps in the most UNLIKELY of settings.The basic rule is...not sure?Leave 'em be.However I feel I MUST add shroomers that certainly the tallest,though not necessarily the largest caps,I've ever seen were in Wales and they were very tall elegant mushrooms with v.flattened rather broad caps unlike ANY I've seen anywhere else,even in that area .There was a LOT of them too!Though NONE this year.

Well folks if that don't beat all.I thought to myself as I posted the above that "I'm not going to make THAT mistake".Uh huh! I have two mushrooms damn well identical to the above in my possession,now that they are dry I REALLY couldn't tell them apart from their active "cousins".Examination when fresh however revealed a paler gill,yellow colour and the striations mentioned above.However only CLOSE examination revealed this.I DID NOT identify them "in the field".Maybe we could get a toxicity profile for them?

I have found quite a lot of these "Mycenas", lib look alikes here in Melbourne Australia. They are very fragile when made contact with, and simply just brake in bits. The gills are always white also.
I've found them growing on shady grass,sun, and weirdly enough on stone-gravel road in the sun. I think they like the gravel road best, because the second time I went past the location, there were absoulutely hunderds of them, in little families.

I was at a friend's horse stable in Maryland helping him feed the horses and goats, when the guy went to take a leak and came back with a handful of mushrooms that looked just like that, almost identical. I think he got them were growing on a heap of rotted horse shit with some tall weeds, but I forget. I threw them away because they obviously weren't psilocybes.

What species is that? And whereabout was it growing?
