Today's hunt. (80~ liberty caps.)
    #2110048 - 11/15/03 08:20 PM (20 years, 4 months ago)

Hey. First time shroom hunting. I live in Newfoundland. These shrooms were picked in a horse pasture, next to dying plants. It seemed they only grew around there. It was very wet and shadey, I guess favourable conditions. I plan to go back their tommorow and pick another 50~+

Here's the pick. It may or may not work depending on if the server is too busy. Enjoy, comment.

That is not all of them by the way. About 40 percent of them or so.

Those are certainly look-a-likes...especially living up in Canada.

I believe they are some sort of Mycena.

Better luck next time! :mushroom2:

Heh, to settle an arguement between me and a friend... please comment on this.

Friend: Man, they look excactly like the ones I had.
Friend: 'd guess they would work.
Me: EXACTLY?
Friend: They're just not libs.

They probably still get you very high.
Me: no it doesnt work like that.
Friend: Yes man, noone on that thread said "They won't work"
Friend: Psh. I'd eat them.
Me: heh I will ask at the forums just to see.

they are not active and your friend cant trip off of them. Just because they look similar to an active species doesn't mean they are active and with an attitude like that your friend is destined for mushroom poisoning.

Here is a photoshop inhanced image of Spiritus' liberty caps from Newfoundland

Please observe some mild bluing in the stems of a few, the incurved margin in the ones at the bottom of the image. Some of them are probably P. strictipes and mixed in with P. semilanceata.

i see the incurved margins MJ, i also see the apparent bluing, my scanner does the same effect when there is no backdrop, also, ive encountered the speceis of mycena i suspect this to be occurring with incurved margins. i however would like to draw your attention to the apparent stirations in the cap, not those of p.semilancaeta or strictipes, more like those of a mycena, more wavy than lined.
also stirations remain in the cap after drying, another factor worth noting.
also the gills, and im pretty sure the sporeprint would be white. it is a deceptive lookalike, however the caps are not slimy or sticky in the same fasion of libs, you just cant peel them, they are solid.

Looks better in the image you posted MJ.

I personally cannot make a good decision by the picture. The few bottom mushrooms have the incurved margin, and the basic shape of a liberty cap, however the gills on most are whitish.

I think we would need a sporeprint color to determine what they are!

Oh, and to the poster, dont eat them !

heres some highlights of very mycena-style gills
i wish i had some pictures of this speceis, ive encountered it several times mistaking it for libs right up untill i picked it, then i was all AWWWWWW MAN! they can grow quite plentiful, they can occur slightly greenish in the stipe too,

heres sorta what i mean, but a bit different too...

see the apparent lib-like appearance, but the stirations are more rippled, also, the gills are identical. grey-white, as opposed to purplish brown, which i find libs tend to be at least a light form of if not dark which is common in mature specimines. sometimes showing a light fringe

exactly what type of dying plants did these mushrooms grow by?
it would be really cool of you could get a closeup scan of the gills of one, and another closeup of a bisected specimin, thats split down the center, cut-side on the scanner,
freasher the better.
