Need help with xbox 360 please.

So my little brother has an xbox 369 its shiny and fat i dont know if its a 4gb or a 250gb.

When you buy them new are they supposed to come with and internal hardrive? Like the big box thing you can remove and put it? He got a new game for christmas but he cant play it because he doesnt have enough memory to play or download it or whatever. So we went out and got a 64gb external hardrive but it wont work. Im not sure why but i think his froend who tried to hook it up for him said it wouldnt connect to the xbox like it wouldnt even recognize it.

Can someone help me out and tell me how to solve this? Apparently my aunt said it did come with the internal hard drive but theres nothing in there. We think someone may have taken it that was at our house. Possibly. Were not sure because we dont know if it even came with one.

Thanks and sorry for being confusing i dont know much about the xbox but my parents need help with it cause they know less than i do.

register the serial number at https://myservice.xbox.com and it will tell you what kind of xbox it originally was

get the serial number by going to settings, system, console settings, system info, or looking at the bottom

also try opening up the hard drive slot; its possible its just not connected: http://support.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-360/accessories/add-remove-hard-drive

They take laptop hard drives, I'm pretty sure...

You don't happen to have any of them laying around do you? Idk, maybe I'm weird, but I always keep a few HDDs stashed around my house.

The older ones didnt have internal memory then at some point they started including like 256mb internal. What does it do when you plug the hard drive in?

I thought you had to do some sort of modification to the system to run third party hard drives on it. I'm not much of a gamer but I heard that somewhere.

Nope, it just has to be formatted to fat32(I think that's the format), then you just have to plug it in and set it up.
