i know when they first came out this was a never ending argument, but now that they have been out for awhile i wanted to come back and see if anything has changed.
which do you prefer?
why do you like one over the other?
what are the strong points of each?
what sucks about them?
im getting one for Christmas and i want to make the right decision.

XBox 360 FTW.
To me, the 360 has more, better games; and most of all the support. PS3 is the choice if your looking for a high quality (Blu Ray) DVD player. I personally dont buy into the HD DVD's yet; so the choice was 360 for game support and XBox live.
What sucks about them? You get one... and want the other. I dont toally hate the PS3, just i dont watch HD DVD's, and the 360 had more games i wanted to play at the time. One of these days i'll pick up a PS3, but im still getting a wii first ^_^

I have one of the old square PS1s, a PS2, and PS3. I'm biased, but I say go with the PS3. Free online service, blu-ray player, and great games.  Get the 80gb version if you want to play PS2 games on it though.

I personally have an Xbox360 and I would say just go ahead and get the PS3 if you're not worried about the money.

The xbox 360 elite has 120gb. Not sure about PS3. If i could i'd take both, they both have exclusive games i would like to play.

Like I said, xbox 360 has the best online experience, other than that it's all about exclusive games. PS3 is definitely superior if you don't have plans for exclusive 360 games or online.

well I'm all about great games, graphics, and on line experience. i can give a shit about blu-ray.
it looks like I'm going with the XBOX. is the XBOX live the best?
the only thing i don't like about the XBOX is the controller.

Xbox live i the best online experience, no doubt, and I too am very fond of the controller.
Do yourself a favor, get the longest warranty you can get on it, they tend to overheat easily, I've already gone through two myself, but the newer ones are better I believe.

i have an xbox and its pretty sweet. the shitty thing is that you have to pay $$$ to play online. I don't think you have to do that with the ps3.

PS3 for the win. hands down (well, not really hands down... but no real contest IMO).
Things I (personally) don't like about the Xbox:
-Pay for xbox live
-they break down frequently (my two friends who own one have gone through a total of 5 between them, they get the "red light of death" where the system just dies). Although, when they do break down, xbox will just send you a new one.
Things I love about the PS3:
-BluRay (HD is dead)
-graphics = great
-online is just fine (perhaps not up to par with xbox live, but I havent had any problems/compliants about it)
-more hard drive space than i know what to do with
-I personally like the controller better. The off-level joysticks on the xbox controller drive me batty.
So, in my opinion, it's ps3 handsdown... but I have alwyas been a playstation loyalist.

I just bought a PS3 and I feel it was worth it, although I had a bit of trouble tracking down a backwards compatible model.
Although I'm a bit biased due to the fact I don't like Xbox and never have, but I feel I can afford to not like them I own 18 different working systems and Xbox is the only one I wish I didn't buy.

In the end this debate always comes down to personal preference. I've always been a PS guy so my opinion is biased as well. Some of my thoughts are:
-I hate the cluncky xbox controller. I'd have to find an aftermarket controller that was similar to the PS controller if I owned an xbox.
-I wouldn't pay for online gaming. That just seems like typical Micro$oft double dipping into their customers pockets.
-RRoD I've heard way too many stories about how many defective xboxs are out there. They don't seem to have a problem sending you a new one when it dies, but thats because they openly admit to the defective quality of the units. And who wants to go through the hassle of getting it replaced?
-Blu-ray. Although it is not a reason to buy a PS3 at least blu-ray won the hi-def battle. So if you want the hi-def movie experience then its a nice bonus. And believe me, if you haven't seen a blu-ray movie on the proper TV then I'll tell you....there is an amazing difference from standard DVD!
-Games. Both systems have their share of exclusives. But to buy a system just for one or two games would be silly when there are so many other things to consider. And the majority of games come out for both.
-As far as graphics and gameplay goes both systems are great. Die-hard fans will debate this, but I doubt many people could really tell the difference.

Oh yeah, the backwards compatibility issue with PS3s is a topic to consider also, especially if you already have older PS and PS2 games. I personally don't know the whole scoop on this subject, but I do know that when I bought my PS3 over a year ago that the salesman in the store did me right by steering me to the 60GB model for exactly this reason. Apparently the 60GB model (which I haven't seen since about the time I bought mine) had the hardware built in for backwards compatibility instead of a software emulator. I have yet to find a PS or PS2 game that my system won't play flawlessly, and I still play a fair number of older games. But I hear most of the new system have issues with backward compatibility. So if you want to go PS3 and you want to play older games you might do some research and try to find the right machine to buy.

Yes, online gaming is free.
As far as the GB goes its not that big a deal. You can just buy larger standard hard drives and install them if you feel the need.
As far as games goes, like I said its not the best reason to buy a system. But probably the most notable exclusives to PS3 are
-Resistance:Fall of Man and Resistance 2
-Metal Gear Solid 4
-Little Big Planet
And I've always enjoyed the Ratchet and Clank series as well, if you're into more kid oriented games (I find them to be a fun time waster  ).

PS3 was dogging with the game selection when it first came out, but recently and in this next year they have a huge lineup in the pipeline. Better graphics, free online play. Xbox 360 was competitive when PS3 first came out for sure. But I think PS3 has passed it by now. Even if you dont currently buy into the whole Blu-Ray thing now, eventually you will so plan ahead. It is amazing to watch a movie in HD and now BluRay is the chosen format. And Sony introduces all of the cool new blu ray stuff to the PS3 before anything else. BluRay 2.0 went to the PS3 first. Xbox is not a bad selection and if you get it you will be happy, but I do believe PS3 is the way to go. Remember it was the same way with the PS2 as well. Started off slow and came on like a frieght train.

Nintendo isn't really about graphics and that's why their games look "childish" the usually focus on the other aspects that make games fun.
if you can look bast the look of their games they have some of the best games out there and they usually make thing real easy to pick up. ANYONE CAN PLAY is the whole idea.
the biggest downside I see right now is the system isn't friendly towards "conventional" games which tends to make some of the games feel gimmicky.
IMO if you are already interested in PS3 or 360 you'd probably be happier w/ one of them, but if you're familiar w/ the Wii and you're still interested in it, it's probably something you'd enjoy.

Graphics are not comparable really.
It depends on what kind of games you like.
If it is shooting or driving games, avoid the Wii, but if you just enjoy gaming and having fun, it can be fantastic.
Don't you have any friends who own a Wii? Go visit them and try it out.
Also, if you constantly have friends over at your place a Wii will make your stoner nights a lot more fun

I think Nintendo did a smart thing. They were failing to compete with the traditional gaming systems (gamecube was a complete failure) so they changed their target market. Instead of trying to convince true 'gamers' that they should buy a nintendo, they went for people who typically wouldn't even CONSIDER buying a gaming system.
The Wii is perfect for friend get togethers and other situations like that. It's interactive and entertaining for many who would never consider themselves gamers. For example, my friend T's parents are an engineer and a finance executive. They own a Wii and love it. They would NEVER consider buying & playing a 360 or PS3, but this system is perfect for them. It's not too complex, graphics are good enough for them, but by no means spectacular - it just fits their lifestyle.
In that regard, Nintendo Wii = genius.
However, for our purposes (we being gamers) the Wii is garbage (IMO). I find it extremely difficult to play traditional games with my hands being able to move freely, and I find a slight delay in system's ability to read my movements (and as we know, in traditional gaming every milisecond counts).
I'm glad you (OP) are leaning toward the PS3. I'm very confident that you will not regret that decision.

Next, as others have stated, I HATE monthly fees for online gaming, part of the reason I have never played WoW. I mean, buy a game for 50-60 bones, then have to pay more jsut to play it, that is weaksauce. Xbox live has a monthly fee, ps3 is free to play, and I have had no problems with the online play at all. XBOX live is really nice, but again, paying to play after you have bought the system and the game is ridiculous IMO.
Next is the life of these systems. Xbox has a horrible track record for breaking down and needing replacement. While they have extended their warranty to help alleviate this, it still sucks to be out of a system for 2 weeks while they are being shipped back and forth. I have yet to have anyone I know have their ps3 breakdown or quit working. EVERY single friend I have with a 360 has gotten at least 1 replacement. I have one friend who is on his 4th right now, he games heavily and constantly, so he uses it more than the average user, but 4 is just ridiculous and shows very poor build quality.
PS3 had blu-ray HD format, that is used for both movies and games. If you dont watch movies then its no biggie for that. But ps3 games have the capacity to hold 25gb or 50gb for dual layer. The best xbox360 can do is ~9gb on a disc, though they could just come out with multiple disc games. This hasn't proved to affect games at all yet...yet being the important part of that.
IMO, ps3 is hands down a better system and a better deal over all.

PS3 dominates if you enjoy movies and tv. All I did was buy a 500 gig external hard drive from circuit city, download as many shows and movies i want onto my computer from piratebay or demonoid, put them on the hard drive, then plug hard drive into my ps3 (buy the hard drives from western digital that start automatically when ur computer starts and it will with your ps3). Now since i've made folders in my hard drive, i have over 400 movies organized, along with even more shows, all free, and at the tip of my finger whenver i turn the ps3 on. The ps3 having this capability that the xbox doesnt, alone payed for my ps3 3x times over, and will continue to with every new movie released on dvd.
google this and there is tons of in depth instructions on how to do it if your new to the concept, it is very easy, takes hardly no computer knowledge.

I have a similar setup, though I went for using one of my old computers for setting up a freeNAS server, since i had one laying around and some old harddrives. Now it has 3 500gb hdd, and another 4 or 5 smaller ones installed in it. Then you can go to the UPnP and set it up to share whatever you like under the 'playstation 3' profile, and when you turn it on, you have a media center icon under its respective section, ie. video, music, pics. So i have all my music, movies, and photos stored on this server, which I can access anytime for outside my home, and also stream to my ps3 with ease.

Wii is cool for like parties and shit, or when you are chilling with your girl. But for hard core gamers it just doesnt cut it. I dont even play mine anymore. My 5 year old son loves it though.

you could always stream high def quality movies/shows via the 360 on your tv. plus 360 has gears of war and halo. PS3 doesn't have very many hot exclusives. MGS4 is about my only selling point

way different, you got to buy those movies, this is all free. Halo 3 was disappointing and gears of war is short and the multi player is limited, i really like the game but not enough for me to sacrifice my ps3's money making capabilities.
And PS3 has some amazing exlusives: Resistance (10/10) and sequal is coming, Final Fantasy's are set to come, Killzone, Little Big Planet (10/10), shit even God of War 3 is set to come. Not to mention Ps3 has all the must haves like the rainbow 6 series and the COD series, w/ FAST free online play, way easy to use, less waiting time

Simply put
If you want a great graphics more of a solo gameplay experience plus a nice blue ray player, go PS3
If you want great graphics (the 360 can't push as hard as PS3, but can we really tell the difference anyway?), and you want a great online multiplayer experience for shit talking and killing stuff with your best friends while they may be on the other side of the globe
go Xbox 360. Not that you can't with PS3 but the 360 right now is built around it very much so.

The best thing to do is sit down and decide what you want out of your system? DVD player? Windows Media Center capibilities? Graphics? Game choice?...

personally god of war is the only reason i would buy a PS3 other than MGS4. on that note it wouldn't surprise me if they announced gow3 was gonna launch/follow up on 360. i bet MGS4 will eventually port to 360 as well, but who knows. about psn yes it is nice but live is nice too. it's not like live is extremely slow or anything. it doesn't cost that much really, 40$ for a year i think.
negative on buying movies too lol. i don't buy any of my media. HD quality movies are everywhere online. you can stream them to your 360 and then onto your HD tv. doesn't cost a penny either. just sayin.. but having a bluray player is always a good thing. one huge advantage to PS3. i'm going to get one soon but the 360 is just as good in different aspects.

I own both a 360 and a PS3 (360 being the first one bought) and I can say with all the gamer love in my heart that the PS3 is the better system. From its slick interface to ease of use, to the fact that it has a built in bluray player all turn the PS3 into a better machine
Now granted, many games developed for both systems seem to have a slight edge on the 360 (Orange Box and such) but I think this is just because the developed decided to go for both systems. I think games made exclusively for the PS3 far exceed what is capable on the 360... Just one look at MGS4 can prove this

I have not read through the posts so I'm not sure if any has said this.
360! Because it can be easily modded so it can play burnt games that are downloaded form the net. As far as i know PS3 cant be modded.
