Less than three minutes after he was approached by a Salt Lake police officer, James Dudley Barker began to scream.

"I'm trying to make a living," Barker is seen yelling in footage captured by the officer's body camera Thursday afternoon. "I'm doing my business!"

Barker, 42, refused to give his name or the name of the business he says he has a license for as the officer explains he is responding to calls from neighbors.

"You're suspicious in the neighborhood. People are calling in on you. … I didn't stop you for no reason," the officer says before radioing for assistance.

Barker is seen stepping back from the officer and cries, "You can't get in my face, man!" He then swings the snow shovel he is holding.

The video shows the sky as the officer presumably tumbles from the porch. The footage ends a second later as the blue shovel lands a second blow, breaking the camera.

The moment that followed seconds later, when Barker was shot and killed by the unidentified officer, was not recorded.

I say it was a bad judgement call on the police officer.
The police officer should have backed off a little until his
backup arrived to avoid shooting some retard. It seems
police officers are too much into people's faces these
days and are looking for any reason to shoot people.

Don't give me that self-defense crap either. The police officer
is obviously not trained well enough to handle stressed out
people.

As for Barker, he does looks like a thief scoping
the neighborhood out for easy homes to rip off.

It still doesn't give the police officer a reason to shoot him.

You can kill someone with a shovel. It has a sharp edge.

Ensue all the cop hate though. I'd love to see how any of you take getting threatened being cut up with a long, sharp object.

That guy clearly had some mental issues.. but it's hard to say if the cop was justified in killing him or not since the camera cuts off as soon as things get good.

For all we know the cop had 10+ feet on the shovel guy and coulda just as easily tazed him.

But remember we live in a society where cops pretty much always shoot first and ask questions later, so it wasn't very smart for the shovel guy to swing at him.

Secondly, the cop clearly reached out first and initiated physical contact first. If he had simply backed off like the man requested then there might not have even been an altercation.

That guy was up to absolutely no good. He was definitely scoping out cars and houses while pretending to legitimately shovel snow. too bad there was no snow to shovel or it would have been believable. He was corned and responded with anger which shows his guilt. Shouldn't have swung that shovel.
