It's hard to tell by now. You'll have to birth the cake and wait.
I can tell you i've seen something similar in different situations. Dry substrate, which seems you don't have. Contaminated substrate, which we don't truly know if it exists. Heavily packed substrate, the mycelium has no place to grow or "breathe", such places sometimes do look like uncolonized spots.
There's not much you can do now but wait, if you feel you've packed the substrate too tight, my advice is to restart and don't wait.

seti,
my jars look fully colonized, but the area outside the lines seems to be a lighter white and almost thin and fluffy looking. i have no idea what's going on in the middle, so i didnt want to crumble the cake up for casing.
who knows...

Sometimes when mycelium is left at too high of temperatures it begins to metabolize giving off a yellowish goo. My girlfriend has cased cakes like that in the past with little problems. Make sure the temps in your incubation room aren't too high above the mid 80s and that they don't sit too long after full colonization.

Roger , roger .... add h2o2 to the water you'll be using for dunking the cakes. 1:10 h2o2:water ratio.
As for the ratios goes, make 1/2 verm, 1/4 BRF and 1/4 water. Btw, how's the size of the verm chunks you're using ? Bigger chunks are harder to work with because they have to absorb more water and most teks rely one's using medium coarse verm.

Fruity smell often means bacterial contamination.
Sorry :frown:

i birthed my cake 6 days ago. half of it is a light yellow color and the other half is nice and white. on the yellow part, there is a large circle of white mycelium. i have some nice size pins now, but so far no signs of pinning on the yellow. there is no fruity smell. could the yellow color just be due to moisture?

I agree with seti. It probably is mycelium piss.
You'll have to wait, if it starts smelling you should toss it. Meanwhile, mist with a h2o2:h2o solution.
