My whole thing is that if I do something that wrongs someone it makes me feel bad.  I don't think it's possible to eliminate my empathy beyond a temporary moment.  It always comes back as I see us all as a human being, therefor tying us all together.  I just make sure to only keep like-minded individuals close to me.  I can accept everyone for who they are, but I don't allow everyone to get close enough to take advantage of me.  If that is the wrong way, then I can live with myself.  But I couldn't live a joyous life going around taking advantage of others and willfully bringing pain and suffering into their lives.

I personally think the red pill blue pill analogy is pretty simple minded, reducing all personality and logic to simple binary. My world view, experiences and how I feel at the time is way to complex to reduce it to just "take the red pill man, they got the wool over your eyes"

I always hated that metaphor outside the the move the matrix.

Movies are a form of art so clearly it's all up for interpretation, if it means anything at all. I think there's elements of the movie that are intended for psychedelics. If you remember in the beginning he's supposed to follow the white rabbit. They show up at his door, he tells him 'mescaline is the only way to fly.' Normally he's in his normal, every day life, then he takes the pill and everything changes. His potential explodes only when he takes the time to let go and realize it. It shouldn't take a reminder for it to clue in that he was in fact flying later on.

I have a pretty well laid out idea of that I think this movie means and it's not usually anything close to the common interpretations. It's probably just a movie and they didn't mean anything by it though.

If anything it's just supposed to be trippy and send you through a loop when you're fried.

The pill metaphor does have a time and place to use,
it makes sense in a way
it is like "waking up"
or when Dorothy "sees in color" when she goes to Oz.

But keep in mind

I know people who believe aliens built the pyramids, deny the holocaust, believe in ley lines, deny HIV, believes crystals are sentient

and they tell me I need to "wake up" or "take the red pill"

The metaphor does not work when everyone thinks they are doing the right thing.

And yet, the world, as a whole, is better with less disease and strife than it was 100 years ago, or a thousand.
Positive Psychology states that people will, of course, remain your friend or partner as long as they see
a long term advantage. But this doesn't mean a relationship cannot be mutually advantageous, right?

P.S. If I die in the woods, I want my family to eat every scrap of me to survive. Every morsel.

This is an important observation to make as it helps us identify with the nature of coexisting organisms. Competition is what helps us survive through gene selection and when the shit hits the fan, he who does not fight, dies.

That being said, is the reason that society generally does not lapse into the nature of the beast not because we, as humans who are able to observe our conscious minds, can transcend these innate characteristics?

You and I both know, as people who have experimented with psychedelics, that all of this sense of self is illusionary. That the true, interconnected nature of existence is well above anything innately human. I think the fact that we are the only creatures of this earth to be able to peek through the looking glass and observe ourselves, even for a moment, is cause enough for us to try and live above this nature that makes us inherently selfish.

I'm not sure love does exist beyond oxytocin and the other things the body/brain releases to cause these emotions.  I'd like to believe otherwise but its not been useful to do so.

I'm living on a planet of animals that consume each other to exist :shrug:
