P. Cubensis?? Please help ID pics, thanks!

Hi! I found these today growing up under some leaves in a forest. The area had seen some rain lately, and there were healthy populations of various mushrooms. The pictures are a bit on the red side for some reason, but the base of the stems show mycelial bluing. The stems are showing low level bluing, possibly due to low temperature and refridgeration.
The mushrooms have veil remnants on the stems, which are white, and fading to brown in some spots. The largest cap is about 4 inches across the top. Cap color is off-whitish to brown, typicaly darker in the center. One of the younger specimins has an umbrella shape, the older specimins have pretty much flat tops with minor curvature wither up or down. Gill color is dark, almost a purplish hue. The pictures make it look more brown than it realy is. The tiny new mushrooms have brown caps with white stems. All of these where collected in pretty much the same decaying leaf material, pine needles, rotten wood, etc. Typical forest floor, although they were found close by some rotting wood.

Anybody with a positive or negative ID or clue on the ID of this strain, please help me out. I am very new to this, and I wouldnt want to go without experienced advice! Thanks

i dont think those are cubensis man were they growing off any manure?

Nope, they were growing up from mostly rotting vegetation and wood

Well, it is certainly a look-a-like species. At first glimpse, they physically look like a Ps. cubensis.

However, since they were growing from wood in a forest, and the shape of the mushrooms and other macroscopic differences, I could conclude that they are defiently not Ps. cubensis, or any active species.

I'm with Mr_Mushrooms on this one. The free gills and dark spore print color say Agaricus.

Cut one of them in half vertically, scrape the inside with your knife edge to bruise it, and watch for color changes. Some changes can occur within a couple minutes, some will take an hour. Let us know about the color changes.

Also, smell the mushroom, especially at the top and bottom of the stem. If it basically has an earthy (or no particular) smell, try crushing the stem base with your fingers and sniffing again.

What do you mean by free gills, as in disconnected from the stem or partialy disconnected from the cap? The gills do not make contact with the stem if that is what you mean. They end just before they would have run into the stem. They definately have some sort of blueing reaction. It is definately pretty subtle though, and especialy apparent on the underground portions with small amounts of mycelium still attached. If these arent active it would still be kinda cool to find out what they are! I have a color/brusing test going right now but it seems as though the insides of the stalks when scraped with a knife turn more of a brown that anything. The smell is that of a store bought mushroom only more intense and with some other smell incuded... difficult to desribe.

Free gills are gills that are not attached to the stem.

There are a few odors that are fairly common in the genus Agaricus. One of the more common ones is described as "sweet" or "almondy" - it smells like almond extract. Another is "phenolic", also described as "metallic", "ink like", "library paste", or just unpleasant.

I am unaware of any species af Agaricus with a blue bruising reaction. When we say blue, we mean an obvious blue color. A lot of people have been poisoned by mistaking other bruising reactions for the blue bruising many active mushrooms show. Many of them have been looking so hard for a blue color that they manage to see one when others only see darkening.

When you cut the mushroom in half, was the stem solid all the way through, or was the middle hollow or stuffed with pith?

The bluish hue could be due to something else, even the fact that most of these were found under leaves and decaying matter. The stems of these mushrooms are filled with pith... A highly spongy material compared to the rest of the stalk. The pith is basicly pure white. It smells a bit like ink i suppose. Not a very pleasant smell either way lol. I have taken a spore print, but i cant upload any more pics for a while lol. It's pretty much a drak brow color. I will upload the pic when i can.

An ink-like, unpleasant scent indicates that they are probably in the group of mushrooms around Agaricus xanthodermus. Unfortunately, those are the poisonous mushrooms in the genus. They cause indigestion, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and severe headaches.

The spore print of most Agaricus species is similar to the color of dark chocolate. If yours is pretty close to that, then you needn't upload a photo of it.

Toxic Man or MRMushrooms...DO you know if "free Gills" can be a characteristic in some non-active pans. Like the antillarum. Since they are bell shaped it is a little harder to notice them but after you pick and open up the cap, I think I noticed that some of the non-actives had free Gills. I am trying to find some more distinct features to seperate the Copes from the other non-actives. They look so alike.
