I'm still not sure what makes you think this would be limited to America. Japan takes faulty things back, and the Japanese aren't as meticulous as they want you to believe.

If something is faulty, then you actually have a legitimate reason to return it though. And I have never seen a store in Japan, except maybe the department store, accept returns. And even then, when you return something at the department store, they WILL check to see if the device is defective or not first.

Unlike people who work at Target or Walmart, because what do they care, they're getting paid only $8 an hour, so they don't care about doing their job thoroughly. Just let the customer return whatever and input any type of "legitimate circumstance" into the computer to make the refund go through.

Like I said the Japanese aren't that meticulous. They're as prone to paying attention to details as an American. Just read some of the stories coming out of Japan... You're talking about a country that will do welfare checks to domestic violence victims by phone

I know plenty of people who have worked in retail. I used to myself.

We speak of horror stories about how Americans would order a cake, eat the entire cake, and then complain about how it didn't taste good so they'd demand a full refund (and they'd get it from the manager).

really? see, even as a sales person, I want the cake back. I worked in
restaurants and when someone said "my food wasnt edible, I want this taken
off the bill" I look at the amount of food left, a bite or two from each
thing and it's reasonable to believe the person didnt like the food, half
the food is eaten, it's obvious what the issue was, the customer is trying
to play games and the bill will stand.

so "did you bring the cake back with your sir? no, well sir I'm afraid I
cannot issue a refund without a return of the merchandise"

Only in America, could you buy a pair of shoes, wear it for 5 years, and then go and return it to Costco or REI.

really? you mean to say you didnt just make this up, that they have a
lifetime warranty on shoes and you can simply take them back to the store
when they look like this and they will issue a refund?

I dont think so.

the company I work for offers a lifetime warranty on the goods we produce,
the reason is that they're very high quality for the market and you also
pay about 5x what similar product would cost. you pay for that warranty,
you pay for a company rep to personally deliver your replacement and of
course, we bring the old one back to the plant. we have a quality
department that runs tests on parts produced every hour, we test finished
goods every day, some things for as long as a month to cover something
that would exceed a lifetime of cycles, machines designed to simulate use,
others to exceed stresses of normal use and we then destroy the test
pieces by cutting them up to determine how it fared

who exactly is that warranty putting out of a job? seems it's created some
jobs, enough so that we've recently added 80 more people and several extra
product lines from our division

Don't like the donuts you bought at the supermarket, even though you ate only half of them? Complain about it, and get a FULL, not even a partial refund, for all the donuts you ate!

"I'm sorry, we cant offer a refund unless you're returning a portion that
shows you were actually unhappy with the product"

wanna know why potato chip manufacturers have their satisfaction guarantee?
it's simple, when it takes a pound of potatoes to make a $5 bag of chips
and you're paying $3 for 10lbs of potatoes, you're charging well in excess
of the value of the goods even when taking into account for spoilage,
labor, marketing, packaging and energy. then they give you a coupon for a
few free bags

they also log your info into the database and after a few replacements
they stop sending to a specific address and name.

By phone? No, you are confused about Japanese technology.

In Japan, all new apartments come with an emergency button that reaches a call center. If you hit that emergency button, the emergency alarm will blare and you will hear somebody's voice over the speaker asking if you need assistance.

If you need assistance, they will come do the welfare check in person.

Here's the thing. I know from having worked in retail, that customers will often tell the customer service manager that the "device doesn't work" or the "clothing didn't fit me," when in reality they want to create a fake excuse to get their money back.

The customer service person will then input into the computer that the "size didn't fit," or the "device is defective" into the computer system, without ever checking first to see if it really works or not. Especially for large corporations such as Target or Walmart, this is how the return policy works.

and those so called faulty goods are frequently returned to the shelves,
possibly as clearance items. stores like walmart have these policies in
place because they do expect a certain number of returns, it's factored
into their overhead, they also return products such as lawn mowers, TVs
and stuff back to vendors and those products get tested, sometimes
refurbished and then resold through other outlets. some go straight from a
department store along with out of season stuff to discounter who buy the
stuff by the truckload without seeing the actual merchandise, only a list
of goods that is supposed to be in the truck

so... in reality, this hasnt cost jobs, it's created new jobs

I am not mistaken. I am saying by phone after the incident has happened and a protective order has been applied. Instead of visiting them as they would in the US, police will often just call the victim from the kobani. In the US the police would visit the home.

The police in Japan came under criticism for this a few months ago when a stalker boyfriend was in a girl's home and they called her to make sure she was OK. As soon as they hung up the phone the man came out from the closet and killed her. I don't really hold the police at fault for this, but Japan is not really as detail-oriented as people say.

If they were they might have known what to do with that girl in Sasebo who chopped her friend's head and arms off earlier this year. She had already poisoned her classmates, killed a bunch of animals, tried killing her father with a baseball bat (fractured his skull), and a counselor said she was a particular risk child and that she was going to kill somebody. The father pleaded and pleaded to have her institutionalized but couldn't.

Instead Japan decided to let this girl live on her own at age 16 and be truant from school for months, at her counselor's advisory since they couldn't get her the treatment she needed. If there was ever a case that just paying a little bit of attention could have kept from happening, this was it.

for someone that worked retail, you sure dont seem to know much about return policies and such.

REI has a 1 year policy and you must bring the recipt, doesnt cover
improper use or damage caused by negligence. excessive wear on products
tend to fall under improper use

walmart has a 90 day policy, again, a receipt is required or it's a store credit

most stores limit their returns to 30 days with a recipt

I think that has more to do with the fact that there has been no real feminist movement in Japan, or any of Asia.

The Japanese are extremely detail-oriented. Everything is clean and neat and orderly, they are so detail-oriented they create inventions for even the most minor inconveniences (such as easy-to-open konbini packages, or headwear made to prop your head up while sleeping in the subway, or specifically-made natto chopsticks to make natto fluffier when you stir it).

LOL, my ex returned a $1,000 bike at REI after using it for an entire year. He simply got bored of it and stopped cycling. He claimed that the chains were "defective" and it caused him to slip and break his arm. The store manager simply gave him the cash refund anyway, probably out of fear of being sued.

A lot of people who have worked in retail know that store managers have the ability to over-ride store refund policy.

Exactly. Customers will scream, throw temper tantrums, and sometimes even get violent with you just for not giving you what they want.

Here's a great example of how crazy these people can be:

or because it was within the time period for the return, they also track
purchases. they ised to have a policy like LL Bean where they would take
anything back regardless of it's age but that ended a few years ago
because people were bringing back ancient equipment. LL Bean still has the
policy but you also have to look at the prices they charge, it's certainly
above the prices walmart charges for a comparable item and it forces the
honest people to eat the difference.

And why do you think REI changed that policy? Because too many people were abusing it, duh; it's not that infrequent of an occurrence.

REI changed that policy only recently. They were still having the permanent refund policy back when my ex returned his bicycle.

Probably never went to jail, she never made a payment so they couldn't track her down, unless there was another camera that managed to take down her license plate to identify her.

Even if they found her, she probably only spent a night in jail, was probably let out the next day, and ordered to do community service.

She received 60 days in jail, and just that little bit of footage is enough to identify someone after played on the local news. National news and you can guarantee they will catch her.

Hah! Yeah, Japan and all of Asia has a really bad bystander effect. If somebody is getting beaten up, or committing a rape, nobody intervenes. That's Asian society. You keep to yourself and mind your own business.

I saw a Japanese guy getting mad and slapping a handicapped guy in Tokyo, there were probably at least 2,000 people walking around and nobody said or did anything.

That's one good thing about America. Americans are vocal and speak up. They aren't shy about intervening in justice situations.

Melodi Dushane and she was charged with felony vandalism, 2 counts of
misdemeanor assault. shewas given 60 days in jail and 3 years of probation
in addition to an order to stay away from McDonalds... so no, she got no

I love when someone orders a drink, drinks  three quarters of that shit, and then sends it back saying they didn't like it and they want something else. Fuck off. I understand if you take a sip and I fucked up and you want a new one or something different, but if you just don't like it I don't really give a fuck. That's your problem.

OP, have you ever considered that a liberal return policy encourages (probably to a large degree) impulse spending and in the end these policies actually are a source of income for businesses? "you can always return it!" is a great argument to buy something you may not really need or want.

I personally know people who buy extra stuff at Home Depot that they may not need just to make sure they have the right amount or size or whatever because they can return what they don't use. Except they don't always.

Fuck, I've done that.
