Americas refund policy is killing jobs
    #20912512 -

The USA was at the height of its economic boom in the 1950's when labor unions were so strong, primarily because of the fact that strong labor unions allowed for workers to buy goods such as automobiles and homes.

In Japan and Sweden, it is extremely difficult to get fired due to strong union policies, yet both of these countries have such a strong work ethic.

U.S. minimum wage workers are in fact, the laziest, and provide the most crappy customer service, because of the fact that they have no incentive and therefore don't give a shit.

Rather, I believe what is truly destroying the economy is America's ridiculous refund policy.

I know plenty of people who have worked in retail. I used to myself.

We speak of horror stories about how Americans would order a cake, eat the entire cake, and then complain about how it didn't taste good so they'd demand a full refund (and they'd get it from the manager).

Only in America, could you buy a pair of shoes, wear it for 5 years, and then go and return it to Costco or REI. Want to go camping? Go buy all the equipment at Sports Chalet and then return it the week you get back for a FULL refund!

Don't like the donuts you bought at the supermarket, even though you ate only half of them? Complain about it, and get a FULL, not even a partial refund, for all the donuts you ate!

We need to do away with the whole bullshit of "the customer is always right." Sorry but when I worked at any of the food service and retail jobs prior to getting my license from trade school, I could tell you that the good majority of customers don't know shit about the company they're shopping at and always have too high of expectations. They are NEVER right. Do you really expect the $8/hour clerk to care about helping you find your item? Do you really think that smile on the low wage worker's face is genuine?

Corporations and companies create a facade to make themselves look better to the public eye when in reality they are bigger pieces of shit than all the murderers in prison.

Ever since the recession hit, the whole concept of business has completely changed for the WORSE. I remember prior to 2007 I could get any job I wanted EASILY. After 2007, you would be lucky to even get a single call back from a company that you applied for. Finding a job nowadays is literally through pure LUCK or fate. You literally need to be at the right place at the right time with the right person.

The world is definitely fucked.

No it wasn't.  It was because the competition was devastated by war or communism. We were the only serious industrial nation left standing after 1945.

France is feeling the sting of that with high unemployment since companies are very reticent to hire because they can't throw out the bums.  This is why teacher tenure in our primary education system has led to utterly shit education.  You can't get rid of the bums.  I'm with Jack Welch all the way.  You should tithe every year.  Get rid of the 10% bottom performers every year.  Good for the company and good for the bottom performers.  How would you feel if you stayed in a job where you were in the bottom 10%?

Shouldn't the incentive be to get better and do better to get a raise?  That's how I felt when I made minimum wage.  Show that you have value and you can demand more.

That isn't America's refund policy.  If some company thinks that will help them with customer retention fine.  I wouldn't do it but it isn't my company.

No other country has a similar refund policy. In other countries, usually you cant return something unless its not opened, or you have a legitimate reason for returning it, such as item was defective or broken or didn't fit. You definitely cannot eat a whole pizza or cake and then complain it tasted bad and get a full refund.

The refund policy and entitlement attitude contributes to the killing of the U.S. economy.

Not true. Reading the comments on JapanToday.com I learned that this same thing happens in Japan too.

Lol zappa doesnt understand how teacher tenure works. Teachers dont get tenure unless they've been teaching at least 20 years, have published numerous books, and have proved they are worthy of getting to tenure.

In japan, most stores have no refund policy. The only place that does is the department store, and you must have some legitimate reason to return the product. Not just because you want your money back. I couldn't even get my computer cord returned at Don Quixote (I have no idea why japanese version of target is called that so dont even ask) because the cord was too short since they didn't accept returns.

What's destroying the economy is competition. You know how much food gets thrown out at supermarkets simply because of differing prices or different packaging?

If the world wants to become sustainable, we need to stop selling so much crap. Get it down to basics, have less brands. It's fucking dumb that people spend money on say, frozen french fries. Cut your own damn fries.

If people had to actually cook all their food, then there wouldn't be an epidemic of obesity. More money would be going towards more important areas of the economy. Wages wouldn't seem so steep because people aren't eating like pigs, and even if they are eating them same they're saving money because they're buying raw products instead of prepackaged goods.

If you want to talk food, THIS is what to talk about. It needs to happen, but everyone and their grandma has this sense of entitlement on the option of multiple frozen pizzas.

Not in NY

http://www.uft.org/new-teachers/tenure

Quote:
After you are appointed to a position, state law requires you serve a three-year probationary period. During that time supervisors are supposed to observe you in your classroom several times a year and evaluate you in more than 20 categories including classroom management, lesson planning, presentation skills and how you will use the data from student test scores to help you as you plan instruction.

Generally, at the end of three years of acceptable service, you will be entitled to due process rights under Section 3020a of the state Education Law, which governs the discipline and dismissal of tenured teachers. This is commonly called acquiring tenure, but it is effectively the completion of your probationary period.

No publishing is required.  It might go longer than 3 but 20 years is out of the question.  You'd get fired long before that if you suck so much.  I think you might be thinking of professors.  I specifically said primary teachers.

In order to make an opinion on what drives the US economy (largest in the world at $17,000,000,000,000 GDP) you should gather some facts.

I found an article that says return fraud costs retailers $9 billion a year.

So basically zero effect on a $17 trillion economy.

To put in more understandable terms, imagine the US is a $17,000 economy. Return fraud would cost US retailers $90.

This is dumber than people bashing food stamp recipients because it costs $85 billion a year, again, absolutely nothing in a $3.8 trillion government budget.

At the end of the day, retailers price their items based on their balance sheets. So every $1 is taken into account before they slap a price tag on their items. Return policies and return fraud are already priced in.

I'd say the Japanese are more reluctant to take refunds unless it's faulty, but I read something on this about 3 months ago on JapanToday.com like I said which indicated they have the same problem. The people who comment on that site are expatriates living in Japan, and generally critical of Japan, but they do offer a sense of reality on the country.

Actually it would be $9.  That's about 5 hundredths of a percent.  Food stamps are about 2.25% of the budget.  That is hardly nothing.  It is 50 times more significant than return fraud

Since you mentioned Costco you do realize they are turning out good profits and are paying there employees higher then average wage.  Have a very high retention rate

http://www.marketwatch.com/investing/stock/cost/financials

Nope no economic ruin there just more bull pulled from where the sun dont shine.

Maybe REI is the reason oh wait they had over 2 billion in sales last year.
http://www.rei.com/about-rei/newsroom/2014/rei-sales-top--2-billion-in-2013.html

Yeah finical ruin for sure . Damn Republicans.

Both these companies are doing very well. It has zero to do with labor relations or return policies
