The tradition of the harvest dinner is older and more important than the national holiday of Thanksgiving, and it's possibly my favorite yearly tradition. I always get together with my parents and brother to have a giant feast and get completely sloshed. It's awesome, beats the crap out of Christmas. :thumbup:

What is this revisionist shit about Lincoln? People had been celebrating thanksgiving before Lincoln was born. He doesn't get credit for the holiday because he was president when it became an official holiday.

With that logic, Reagan is responsible for Martin Luther King Day and it celebrates trickle down economics.

Lincoln did make it a national holiday, to be celebrated from that day on. He set the day that it would fall on every year as well. My only point was that the original Thanksgiving that we celebrate today as a part of the regular calendar had little to do with the stuff people celebrate it as today (pilgrims, native americans and turkeys "the first thanksgiving", etc).

There's nothing revisionist about it, it's true. I didn't mention Lincolns name to somehow change the history of it, he was merely involved and it gives people a sense of the time period that it was turned into a national holiday.

Yeah, thanksgivings were celebrated before that as well, for many reasons. I suppose the message you can get out of it is that thanksgivings have nothing to do with the history of thanksgivings, what they originally had to do with was pretty much in the holidays namesake.

Not trying to revise history though. I don't know how you get that out of what might have been said.

Thanksgiving is a horrible holiday. It doesn't even mean anything anymore. It's just an excuse to get drunk and fat. I think we already have like a dozen of those a year.

White guilt is the prevailing racism of our society.  Its where white people feel bad about having white skin and project the sins of, often long dead, white people on to themselves and other white people.

See how the person above me says "we raped and pillaged their land", even though its likley nobody in this thread has raped or pillaged any land.  That projection of the sins of long dead white people onto modern white people simply because we have the same skin color is white guilt.  Its racist, disgusting and mainstream.
