So what do you shroomerites think about thanksgiving?
    #19198942 - 11/28/13 12:28 AM (10 years, 2 months ago)

Ok so as a lot of you may know (hopefully you Americans at least) Thanksgiving is tomorrow. I've always thought of Thanksgiving as a great holiday to come together to see family, enjoy a good meal together, and fall asleep on the couch in a food coma surrounded by loved ones watching football.

But I have to say I found myself thinking about the history behind Thanksgiving-the pilgrims feast with the Native Americans etc. I'm not too great with my colonial history so correct me if I'm wrong but didn't the pilgrims end up screwing over the Native Americans...you know like killing a bunch of them, robbing their graves etc.?? I did a little internet research and from what I found I'm still not sure if this is just a conspiracy theory, a legitimate theory, or a definite fact, so I'd love it if someone would point me in the right direction.

But the real point of my post lies here. Say the pilgrims did end up doing these horrible things later on, does that mean Thanksgiving is an illegitimate holiday? I'm not sure exactly where I side but I tend to think that Thanksgiving can still be a good thing if we don't get caught up too much in the history and just enjoy the metaphor of giving and being thankful for what we have in this crazy life.  :vaped:

Anyway happy Thanksgiving to all my fellow 'muricans out there! Stuff your faces and please, please don't get sucked into the corporate trap that is black friday...but hopefully that goes without saying at a great place like the shroomery am I right?

We won. All right? We came in and we killed them and we took their land. That's what conquering nations do. It's what Caesar did, and he didn't go around saying, "I came, I conquered, I felt really bad about it." The history of the world isn't people making friends. We had better weapons, and we massacred them. End of story.

Hmm...I can honestly say I've never thought it that way and I'm not sure why because it's perfectly true, very Hobbesian. But then again, isn't killing all the Indians a necessary evil and not necessarily the type of stuff that's used to make a holiday?

The whole Pilgrim vs Indian thing isn't so black and white. Neither was the whole slavery thing.

I am most definitely not one of those types, I love that I don't have to worry about dying each time I get strep throat. By the way Johnny, love your movies! I recently saw the Rum Diaries and really enjoyed it (heheh for those of you who cannot seem to take a joke: no I am, in fact, not actually that stupid)

The native americans weren't dying of those thngs in mass numbers until the white men came here...

Most major American holidays are kind of fucked up. Either historically or by the customs we perform.

Halloween is fucking whack, you dress little kids up to look like little walking nightmares and send them off to run around in the streets and ask strangers for candy....

Christmas is a greedy mess centered around money

Easter is about worshiping a fucking zombie

fourth of July celebrates the war that killed more American's than any other in history

thanksgiving celebrates the native American genocide

Fuck it, get drunk and eat food.

One of those types? Wtf. Get real u fuckin greed driven assholes. We made it better for usand over populated and made a fuckin wreck of the land..we also gave birth to greed which led to so many fucked up crimes. In no case is stealing land and killing innocent people ok. They were here first.

You can't argue as to whether it made things better or worse because you aren't some fucking omnipotent being. So it's a pointless argument.

Honestly, I would love america so much if there was a fraction of the amount of people and especially if most the gold and precious gems/minerals had not already been prospected. That's my game but it's slim pickings since people have been mining the land for hundreds of years.

But on the other side, if we hadn't come in here and stolen all this land, I probably wouldn't exist and neither would you.

So fuck it, be thankful for something and get over the past... that you didn't live in.... or have any part in.... or have any reason to bitch or argue about....

Calm down there big guy. By saying I'm not one of those types I just meant I'm not the type that thinks we should live in huts and that modern medicine is bad. I'm still on the fence here. But consider this-the world revolves around changing of power. Yeah we fucked over the Native Americans. But I'm sure plenty of Native American tribes fucked over one another during their time. The truth I'm getting behind all of this is the fact that we have to be realistic here. I'm definitely not saying I'm happy about this or want it to be this way, but it has become a fact that violence is a part of human nature in their struggle for power.

A lot of people out there can't live peacefully and be happy with what we have without wanting more for themselves. Sadly that's just the way it is. Until maybe everyone in the world gets dosed with a whopping thumbprint...that'd be the day :crazy2:

Yeaaa the meaning and origin behind Thanksgiving are pretty twisted...but disregarding that, the way I see it, its a time to eat dinner with close family and chill, doesn't seem all that bad. Kinda boring to be honest, I don't make that big a deal out of it. Its more or less an obligation for me to attend but its not a terrible one:shrug:

:lolsy: good post.  :awesomenod:

its all in how you look at it.

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/19198388

honestly i think the point is trying to better our selfs and be grateful for what we have and to spread the love like almost all holidays.

even if the government prays on it to suck what they can out of us.
