Typical wooden mouse traps work really well and are cheap. Nutella works great, so does peanut butter. Pretty quick and painless for them. You'll be less involved with the whole process, too. At most, you'll hear a SNAP, and then grab the trap and toss the trap and mouse together. I saw one get snagged and it was pretty much instant death.

Last winter at a different house, the mice were coming in through the dryer vent that lead outside. I looked behind my dryer and saw some dry wall was chewed off, and mouse shit was all behind the dryer. Maybe that's an area to look. Look for tiny bits of mouse shit, and that's a decent area to start laying traps.... If you go this route. I'd recommend it though.

Drowning sounds messy. The water, the wet dead mice and what not...
