Sigh, I might just bite the bullet and become a lawyer
    #20855876 -

Sometimes I feel that it's what I've always been destined to do. Everyone always told me as a child, "You'd be such a great lawyer." Of course, that was really a passive aggressive way of saying, "Fuck you you little shit for arguing so well." I don't argue much anymore, but the truth is that I'm still very good at it if I want to be. I just hate the thought of doing it. I feel that I'd be a very good criminal defense attorney, but I just don't know that I'm interested in doing it. At this point in my life I am running out of options. already have BA degree, and one of my majors was philosophy, which means I could go ahead and take the LSAT and go straight in.

Sigh.

Don't choose a career cause you feel you have to, choose one that you're passionate about.

I don't know what I am passionate about. I thought I loved teaching but I only like to teach at the college level and I don't know that I want to start grad school all over and do 5 more years of school...

Law schools are graduating almost two times as many law graduates that are needed in the US economy, it's not the same field it was 25 years ago.

It really doesn't matter, I know a few that graduated near top of their class and they're not practicing law today.

Good luck. All the lawyers I know work like 80 hours a week.

Get used to lots of studying too, a lot of people who get in to law school are suddenly surprised by the fact that they have to study as often as an engineer.

Law isn't the kind of career you should choose for the fuck of it.  It's never going to pay enough to justify the amount of work if you hate it.  "I love to argue" is one of the most common reasons given, but it doesn't carry over into the actual practice as much as you'd think.

Unless you love to read and write, you'll likely not be happy in the practice of law.  Also, it's a competitive field with a lot of people making very little money for the hours they put in.  For trial attorneys like criminal defense lawyers, the money is pretty shitty.

Having said the above, it is a very rewarding career if you do have a passion for it.  I chose law because I couldn't be happy doing anything else.  That's the only reason I can see that anyone should choose law as a career.

If I would be a lawyer I wouldn't be one for murderers and rapists because I wouldn't want to defend them if they were actually guilty. I would be a lawyer for weed though

Just out of curiosity, what percentage of lawyers do you think are actually litigators?  Most of the ones I know do utterly boring and mundane shit.  My wife's ex is a criminal defense guy but most of his work is public defender and he doesn't make shit, as you said.  He does meet interesting characters, though.  My cousin is partners with his brother in law in a mostly insurance firm.  I believe he wrote a book but they aint rich by a long shot.  My sister in law is partners with her husband in mostly landlord tenant law in NYC.  She usually reps landlords which is weird because she is the quintessential barking moon bat liberal.

Litigation is a huge area.  Most lawyers, to some degree, engage in litigation.  Having said that, there are also many lawyers who stay as far away from it as possible.  I can't answer your question, really, because it depends on what you mean by "litigator"....someone who exclusively litigates?  Litigates 50% of the time?  10%?

On top of that, there's the litigator/trial attorney distinction.  OP sounds like he wants to be a trial attorney which is very different from a litigator.  Most trial attorneys litigate, of course, but only for the purpose of preparing for trial.  Most litigators have no intention of going to trial and are like fish out of water when they have to.

I assume that you're asking because of your daughter, and you're probably interested in her making a decent living.  The general rule of thumb is that the more time a lawyer spends in court, the less money he makes.  This has certainly held true in my career.  When I was a PD, I was in court 3-4 days a week and make shit.  Now I am in court 1-2 times a month and make almost 10x the amount.  Go figure.

Still, if OP (or your daughter) has the warrior spirit, litigation/trial advocacy is the place to be as a lawyer.  I'll never give that up, and I actually have three cases pro bono right now that I took solely for the thrill of litigation and the hope of a trial.

And make no mistake, once a lawyer gets a reputation for being a bulldog in court, the hourly rate goes up dramatically.

I mean the guy who stands up in court and argues, which is what seems to be attracting morrow

From my understanding the really big money lawyers are not often the guys who show up in court.  They're the guys who put together contracts and big money deals and whatnot.  A friend of mine was a partner at Goldman and I doubt he ever spent any time in a courtroom.

I suspect she is a dogooder doomed to making a passable living surrounded by scumbags.

Oh yeah there is that.  Joe Tacopina comes to mind but that's marketing.  I have no idea if he has any lawerly skills.  He doesn't always win.

A litigator is a lawyer that argues primarily on paper...not in court.  Appearing for oral argument on a motion is like 5% of litigation.
