Another newb getting it together.
    #20844033 -

Whats up shroomery, Been doing research for a while now, and decided to document my issues for future reference, and to share with my fellow newbies. Let me just say this is the place to go for answers.
I Recently did my first attempt with a pftek, inoculated 8 days ago and only seeing action in two jars. Im thinking it has to do with 1.too much moisture 2. spores came on hot day and didn't get put in fridge for two days. 3.verm was fine grade and a lot was superfine like sand. I know the first two would effect things, but the size of the verm is something I want to test out.(more on that later)
Starting with pf because i feel like i live in a mold infested area (forest, old house) and don't want to be discouraged by contams right away. But after using the PC and getting comfortable with inoculation i feel ready to try a tray grow of some sort. Maybe a mono. But most likely 2 smaller trays in a PMP. Still making up my mind on the FC. (there will be one pmp, ive got the stuff for it already)
Come on this journey as i explore the hobby of mycology :sporedrop:

As far as the verm goes, I think that the stuff that is too fine gets a bit too wet. As i was stirring i would tilt the bowl and no puddle but it looked like mud almost. or wet(saturated) sand. After doing these first jars i took a straining bowl and sifted out the biggest stuff. http://

I think that's a pic of the bigger stuff and the rest that fell through my screen. I will use some big stuff, some mixed, and some fine. and do a few side by sides and see how the mycelium gets through.

I never put my spores in the fridge, and I prefer what's usually labeled as medium grade vermiculite.

All i could get was this fine grade. I think now that its screened out it wont act like mud. Less than half the bag got caught up in my first screen, Im going to do one more screening and see if the next size is big enough too. And do them side by side. I think it was the powder in the bag that messed me up in the first batch.

As far as the spores go I got PEnvy, Gteachers, a+albino, treasurecoast, and brazil. "A cubes a cube", but from what I hear that's not so cut and dry. Ill be the judge of that!:crazy2: Hope to get into making LCs so I can colonize a bit quicker.
As of right now the plan is, build a small PMP for a few cakes (think theres room for 9 cakes to fit comfortably). Use whatever cakes are ready at the time (1st batch, or next one if these are really slow) Ive only got a small pump with one outlet so im thinking stone down the middle and maybe 2 vent holes with poly.
And have monotub with coir, verm, gypsum, and oyster. Ive been reading up on it and it seems like the way to go. Might not be a full size mono, but It seems doable.
Actually I have a pic of my "best" jar. Im a little worrid about this black spot. Could be a big clump of spores that blocked the syringe and got blasted out. Gotta keep an eye on it :stoned2:
Hard to tell with the bad pic, but I hope its just a clump of spores.

I keep my spores in the fridge but never really read why or how..  Is that a bad place to keep them?

Fine vermiculite.  Course verm is better suited as a building insulation, and fine verm is better suited for mycology.

Shotgun Fruiting Chambers are proven to be better over a PMP. Click this and watch part 3.

Already commented on that. You can do this but I know for a fact SGFCs work better and are less maintenance. PMPs are out-of-date nowadays.

As for that picture, could be a spore clump. If it spread you have a problem. Take a better pic and I can identify it for you. (Or try to )

Good Vibes,

EDIT:

ALSO, if you grow your Penis Envy MAKE SURE YOU PUT A CASING LAYER. This has been proven time and time again that Penis Envy BENEFITS HEAVILY from a casing layer. Look up a user named Azur who makes PE on the reg, Albino and regular. He's tested both and recommends a casing layer if you want to do it right.
The rest of those cubes benefit from a casing layer but aren't necessary. With that said CASE YOUR DAMN CUBES. Just make up some extra coir/verm/whatever and CASE it with that at least.

Casings do this:

1. Protect colonized substrate from drying out.
2. Provide a microclimate favorable for primordia formation.
3. Provide moisture for mushroom growth.
4. Promotes stimulation of pinning by signaling mycellium it is out of nutrition and time to reproduce.

Thanks for the tips tagyo, Ive got no problem with the fine grade. After sifting out the biggest pieces they look perfect. even the next size down looks good enough. a lot of it was literally powder. The dust made a muddy mess at the bottom of the bowl. :cuteshit:
And as far as the PMP I got the pump/stone/perlite so im going to make one. And when I make a 2nd chamber it will be a SG. And yes I do plan on casing seems like something definatly worth doing

Thanks again buddy :cactuar:

You can store them in the fridge if you're trying to keep them for a long time but mine always did fine at room temp.  Problem with the fridge (unless you have a myco-fridge just for this hobby) is that it's dirty as fuck, and I just don't put anything in there unless I HAVE to.

I do keep them layered in bags so they have some sort of protection, Also never really food in the fridge so its not too bad.
I just realized why my colonizing was going so slow. I HAD THE FOILS ON TIGHT !! It popped into my head yesterday and I loosened all of them. Well this morning I saw another 3 jars had new spots and the ones that were showing grew quite a bit. Another rookie mistake I should have avoided :nonono:
FAE is important right off the bat.

keep an eye on it...all you can do
a pmp seems to be more work then a sgfc but just do a search on it and click the tc button to see how most feel about it:super: that said good luck and keep us posted

remove the foil and it's gas exchange not fresh air exchange during colonizing, ge for colonizing fae for fruiting, look up printing teks in the mean time so you won't have to order anything anymore:wink:GL!

Ah yes Gas exchange, Well it helped a whole bunch. The myc with the black spot exploded and looks much healthier. The black hasn't grown, so ive still got hope that it was just that clump.
As of now the plan is a smaller PMP for cakes, also a SGFC with a couple trays in it. And possibly a larger mono tub in the future if I get cruising.
I do plan on doing some LC's but I wont say no to taking some prints.

Thanks for stopping in and hopefully Ill do another inoculation soon. :feelsjohngoodman:

 got some drinking glasses instead of jars. 8.5 oz nice short and wide. nice to slide the cake out. with the improved verm it should colonize a lot faster.
I started making the SGFC today, A shitload of holes in these things. over 500! I am making a 100+qt seems a bit big but I want to have room for a few trays and any cakes that don't fit into my soon to be made PMP. pmp will be less than half the size of the sg.
My One concern is how to set up the pmp with the one long airstone. I just have one because the small airpump I got only has one outlet. Don't know if it should go in the middle with a vent on each side, or on the back wall with the vents on the front. That way the fresh air will have to come in and go all the way across before venting out. Something I will do a bit more research on, but feel free to leave your opinion.

Not sure how to instruct you on that since I use an SGFC and two monos but I'll be watching!

Then think outside the box and build a shotgun terrarium which fixes all the problems with outdated PMPs and does so with natural air currents.

The problem with PMPs was and is the steady-state humidity.  Mycelium wants a varying humidity level to pin and fruit properly.  A shotgun terrarium goes through these daily oscillations as the temp and humidity in the room its in changes throughout the day.  A PMP is isolated from these changes, thus develops a steady saturation-humidity level which impedes pinning and growth.

Take a quick look at all the so-called 'automated terrariums' over the last ten years via the search function and try to find one single grower who is still using one.

Ive seen foil used with good results, double up and take off top layer for inoculation. I had a hell of a time finding jars and these were perfect size. And if it doesn't work ive got one hell of a glass set:smile:
