Nitrogen Narcosis

Has anyone ever heard of this phenomenon?

I've been getting into diving and just learned about it the other day. For those who don't know what it is, (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nitrogen_narcosis). From what I understand, as you dive deeper, the gases within the water, such as nitrogen, diffuse into the blood stream due to increased pressure. These gases, as they build within you, can actually effect your consciousness. One guy who I spoke to experienced it so bad, he equated it to an intense nitrous oxide experience. He had to have someone save him because he didn't realize he was still diving.

Obviously this is nothing to fuck with, diving can be dangerous and being fucked up while 100ft underwater sounds like a bad plan. Still interests me though.

Anyone ever heard of this or experienced it first hand?

Yeah I heard of it in Cousteau's biographic book, that I was reading without particular interest in diving.
He calls it "ivresse des grandes profondeurs", something like big depth sickness, and tells some nice stories about it:

"The first stage is something like a sweet anesthesia, then the diver starts to feel like a god: if a fish passing by seems to need air, the "drunken" diver may be able to tear off his respirator to give it to the fish as a sublime homage."

I can translate more but I don't want to ruin what you may experience better by yourself!

You might feel good while you are down there but when you come back up with the bends you will regret it.
