It might keep the ice off but It could make it smear bad when you flip the whipers on.

Which brings up another thing.

Prop up your windshield wipers at night so in the morning they aren't frozen to the windshield.

You will need them.

Ice x for your windshield. Its rain x but for ice. Same shit actually

Eh I never did that. Just lift them and knock it against the windshield. Bust the ice off and let your car warm for 10 minutes. If I got up late get a scraper. Usually I just used my id. Gave myself enough to see. Then mobbed across town freezing my ass off. The car is always warm by the time you get to your destination.

This is true.

But I have ripped the rubber from the blades clean off by just turning on the wipers.

Good fucking zappa people, it's Philadelphia, not Buffalo.  Nobody in Philly needs a block heater and the only reason to start the car early is to run the defroster to loosen up the ice from the windshield, and most of the time it will be ice because it usually starts as rain and then freezes overnite.

If you're in Philly proper you should have no problem driving but if you venture onto less traveled roads remember two things.  Do not change direction abruptly and do not change speed abruptly.  And just because you have good enough traction to accelerate does not mean you have good traction to stop.  Four wheel drive helps you go.  It does not help you stop.

Yeah and starting your car to warm it up also warms you up while in the car. Granted ten minutes down the road it will be warm also.

Philly snowplows can err on the side of sucky sometimes, if it happens to snow early and you have to be on the road early then it's not unusual for the roads to be totally unplowed, and you're totally right on being wary about doing anything abruptly - I think the only reason I know how to drive on slippery roads is because my mom made me take a defensive driving course where the instructors had us all get in a car that was specially modified to fishtail and simulate skidding out of control and maneuver it around an obstacle course. Genuinely think that actually saved my life(and prevented me from killing three of my friends if not more people) when I lost control of my car at higher speeds on the PA turnpike.

But ultimately yah, you're right, this isn't Boston or Buffalo/New England. We bitch and moan, and if you're steet parking you WILL have to repeatedly dig your spot out, and claim it with traffic cones or whatever objects you have(pretty sure most northern cities are like that though) but winter is definitely less severe than it is when you get up into New England.

City people are always complaining about unplowed roads. :ilold:

My road hasn't been plowed or salted in the entire time I've lived here, and the roads freeze worse out here in the valleys.

Anyways Philly's climate would take some getting used to for a southern Californian but for everyone else the winter would probably seem pretty mild. People from states like Colorado would think the snow isn't shit, but Philly would seem colder to them since they aren't used to the humidity.

The summers are also much more humid and gross than they are on the west coast and other areas with more dry heat, I've gone without AC in Philly during a heatwave(on the third floor of a very poorly insulated rowhouse, our basement was very tolerable that summer but my room was like 20 degrees hotter than the basement)

Oh also Crystal get a bike - Philly is one of the best cities to bike in. Super flat, bike lanes, and it's faster than cars a lot of the time because traffic can be such a bitch because of the lights - and there are great bike trails too. Do NOT lock your bike up outside if you can help it, and use extreme discretion(and lock your frame up too, not just the wheel) I had one get stolen in the span of a half hour right next to city hall, and it was heartbreaking.

I don't even own an air conditioner and I heat my house solely with a wood stove. Americans are pansies about weather.

I'm pretty much acclimated to extreme heat after living in Costa Rica without A/C, where the weather on any given day is hot to very hot and humid to very humid.

Yeah o used to heat my two story house with only a woodstove and the year I left there we had 38 days straight where the highest temp was -16 f.

A C. Hahahahaha yeah right.

You know one thing about Philly, I had high expectations that I was going to eat the best cheesesteak anywhere. Unfortunately I was let down.

How could anyone make a better Philly anywhere else in the world? They might make a better sandwich, but the Philadelphia Philly sets the world standard for Phillys

Don't forget the hoagies. The NE, and Philly area in particular have hoagies on lockdown. Can't get a genuine hoagie in other parts of the country.

So, what foods ARE good in Philly?

I'm guessing since the Asian population is low, I shouldn't expect any good Korean, Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai, or Japanese food… are there any Asian markets in Philly?

There are various little Asian enclaves with good Asian food.  Little Vietnam, etc.  Masahari Morimoto owns a restaurant there, if you like Japanese food.

Lots of good Italian food and typical American cuisine.  People in Philly LOVE to eat, it's a real fat town.  Loads of great dining.

Yes!!! I need to eat Japanese food at least once a week, otherwise I feel queasy and sick. I can only stomach so much greasy food.

Morimoto looks really good. All of his dishes look supreme.

It's probably really expensive, but it'll be a good place to take my family when they come visit. I'm VERY glad you told me about that place, because here I was thinking I would never be able to find an authentic Japanese restaurant in Philly, and that I would be forced to open one myself.

I also found a sun-tofu restaurant called Jong Ka Jib, I'll have to try that place out and see how it compares to Kaju or BCD.
