My job wants me to relocate--Providence, Philadelphia, or New Orleans?
    #20711494 -

The company will be funding my relocation all the way, and they are relocating me because I got promoted to a "marketing manager" position.

They gave me 3 locations based on my preference, and it was either New Orleans, Philadelphia, or Providence (Rhode Island).

Well technically they gave me 4 locations, they also gave me "Memphis, Tennessee" as a choice which I said "HELL NO" to, LOL! Are you joking, me, an Asian, in Tennessee? Plus, Memphis actually made America's top 10 most violent cities. No thanks. I prefer to live in an area free from crime and free from hillbillies, thanks.

Based on my preferences, I said yes to both Providence and Philadelphia, and maybe to New Orleans. New Orleans is still recovering from the hurricane, and there's still lots of crime and homeless people, and I just think there's not much of an opportunity there in general.

I think I may prefer Providence slightly more than Philly, because it seems to be a quaint old town that is very rich in history, whereas Philly is more urban metropolitan city (with super high real estate value!!!). I however, would like to hear the opinion of other people who have lived in, or visited either city.

P.S. Bear in mind, I will be driving a car, not taking public transportation. I'm sure driving in Philly would be hell.

I have to rep Philly, as Philly is awesome. It's really not that hard to drive in either. You'll get used to it pretty quick.

Driving in Philly isn't a big deal really.  I'm about an hour north of there, and LOVE Philadelphia.  It's a great city.

While I've never been to anywhere in Rhode Island, I also love New England a lot.  It's so beautiful there, and you're close to so much.  I don't know the exact cost-of-living comparison between the two towns, but don't think that NE isn't expensive; it can be costly as hell.  But I imagine Philly is worse in that regard.

Is pay is going to be the same wherever you go, then you should consider the cost of living in each city.

I actually checked, and I found really great 1-bedroom apartments starting at $700 in Providence. Really not bad at all. If I went REALLY cheap, I even found some that were $200-$300, but I really don't trust the location or the maintenance of those places. I'm sure those are places that don't even have AC or heaters.

Philadelphia apartments start like twice that rate--they're like $1500 for a 1-bedroom, the rates are more similar to LA. In Philly, the REALLY cheap apartments start at like $900. I'm sure they're not in great areas either.

To the poster above, yes pay is the same regardless of the city, which is why I'm leaning more towards Providence. Providence is more my vibe, although I've never visited Philly, so it's hard to say.

You could also live right outside the city. Commute wouldn't  be too bad, and you could probably find something cheaper.

Providence all the way! Close to NY. Close to Boston. Close to the ocean.

Philly is a big city. That would be my second choice.

New Orleans? Fuck it. Katrina fucked everythig up. Then again, if there's a city in the US that needed a bath it was New Orleans. Plus its filled with rednecks and Cajun people. Can you imagine the smell?

That's what I was thinking too. Although I don't like NYC very much, it is incredibly close to Boston, and I just recently went to Boston and I loved it. I'm sure if I wanted to visit NYC or Boston, there would be a metro I could take too.

toss up between providence and philly.

your company should fund a quick LA -> philly -> providence 7day trip so you can feel the two cities out and then have your decision for them when you get back to LA

I wish they would do that. I'll probably do that on my own. I just recently went to Boston, I wish I had at least gone to Providence while I was out there so I could see the vibe of that town.

Having lived and worked there right after the hurricane I can tell you that New Orleans has to be on your list because you are young and it is definitely a young person's town.  Dangerous as all get out, but definitely has the nightlife that you will be craving and the laid back charm of southern hospitality.  If you survive the drive-bys and the corrupt police force.

That is a tough choice. I love all three. Providence would be the most boring city by far, not the culture of the other two, but my God, you could drive anywhere from there!

Providence is a tiny little nothing.  Philly is very cool.  It isn't an accident that Philly costs more.  It also has a very cool young people vibe these days depending on where you live.  My step son lives near Rittenhouse SQ.  Very cool.  I don't know about living in NOLA.  It looks like a shithole outside of the French Q

Philly is nowhere near as cold as Providence, as well. and is closer to Mecca.

I saw a think on FB recently (I know it must be true) that said Louisiana has one of the highest happiness ratings of anywhere in the US. NOLA would probably have the most appeal to me out of those options, but I've never been to any of them.

Lies!

Providence is roughly 400km to the mecca. Therefore it wins this debate for no justifiable reason

I'm really not the nightlife person that I used to be. New Orleans is a little too strange of a town for me, I feel. I heard there's a lot of weird psychics and voodoo shit and "weird street people" all over New Orleans.

The top 2 on my list are Providence and Philly.

Providence is rich in history and has that New England beauty, though! I imagine it's probably like a smaller version of Boston, a city which I adore.

I also found really great 2-bedroom apartments in Providence for only $700 right across the street from the country club! Hah, what a steal! In SoCal, if you wanted to live across the country club, you'd be paying $4,000 a month for an apartment or a condo.

You have to understand I'm on a limited budget here. The pay is the same no matter what city I choose (a little under $60k, although I get a company car and an unlimited gas card). I'm not really that confident I can make it in Philly with that much money, and I doubt I will be making many trips to NYC.
