I'm thinking about moving there. Can anyone tell me what the city is like? Is it all ghetto people? Anything noteworthy I should check out? I'll probably be visiting soon.

I'm going there to study Photography. That should be way better than staying here in this small town. I swear there is nothing to do but sit around and get fucked up. That gets old after 5 years. :smirk:

Like many cities, there are nice parts and bad parts. However, the bad parts overshadow the good parts. Phili is a dump in most parts.

Its a cool city though, theres this "colonial" flavor to it, the old-school architecture and the historical sites, so its a cool place to spend a couple days, but I wouldn't want to live there...

Boooom, Philly's not THAT much of dump... Newark and Paterson, those are dumps.

It's got some slummy parts, but in general, it's alright. Like you said, it does have a "colonial" feel. And some really great places to party or shop. There's plenty of "cultural" things to do as well, with lots of historical sites and museums. Last summer I went to this museum of medical abnormalities. It had all types of freaky shit.

Much like any city, its got its ups and downs, but I would recommend moving there. Everyone I know who lives there enjoys it.

I grew up in the philly suburbs, there's a lot going on in Philly, lots of great bars and a good music scene. It's very pretty in many parts and you can find good places to live for cheaper than New York or even Boston. I think it's a nice place to live(if your parents aren't right there). Yeah, there is a lot of ghetto, but it's easy to see where the shitty parts are, because the buildings are practically falling down and are all burnt out.

Actually, the city is pretty meticulously clean in the nicer bits of downtown. When I went there, on practically every corner, I saw a street sweeper or some other guy in city uniform cleaning up :thumbup:.
Philadelphia is a good city for culture and arts, from what I hear.

Phila. is  fine{go EAGLES :thumbup: :thumbup:)Also grew up near there(Media Pa.).Parts of west and north Phila. could be called ghetto, but plenty of decent neighborhoods.U of P campus Drexel area, South Phila.{GO EAGLES!!}are nice. Plenty of suburbs, too.Where's your place of study?  Did I say go EAGLES ??:grin:

i grew up outside of philly. it's a nice city. there are shitty parts like any city but all in all it's a nice city. check out the art museam, and get down to south street. a lot of good bands come through philly too. the beach is 40 minutes away and the mountains about an hour and a half.  :thumbup:

i also think its kind of dirty and getting a bit worse all the time. however, the part i lived in for three years was rather nice. its true about the colonial look and feel too. the bars...well where i was, every single one of them was an irish pub with 1 juke box and 1 dart board and a dry erase board that someone cleaned with rubbing alcohol so the pesn dont work on them. also...if you're a beer drinker, you'll find that you cant buy beer in a circle k or anything of the sort. you must buy beer to take home, from a bar or a local beer warehouse. i also remember they dont sell on sundays. at all. you cant go to a grociery store and buy beer. its messed up. however, the beer you buy is rather good. and when you go there? check out the amish. they make great cheese. you MUST try the amish cheese. and then make friends with the cows of course. =D i heart the amish. philly is ok. its just not my cupotea. kinda dirty. a little low class, but very pretty if you look in the right places.

I've visited friends that go to school in Philly, and I've taken a few wrong turns and wound up in not so nice areas.  While buying beer from people behind bulletproof glass is sketchy, I enjoy my trips to Philly.  However, its still a dump, but a dump worth visiting.  And it is a dump that you can buy Natty Light in BOTTLES.  Or 3 Hurricanes for $5, clearly the local favorite.

Oh and I wholeheartedly agree that Camden, Newark, Paterson, Elizabeth, The Oranges, and parts of Trenton are complete dumps. But if you like crack or heroin, these places in my state may be worth visting. :grin:
