Re: Giant Fucking Sunspot facing earth, might lead to huge solar flares and Auroras [Re: California]

I work on the "power grid" and a bad solar flare would crush our electrical system.  It's not so much the wires in the air that would make it take so long to repair.  It's the giant transformers inside substations that would break.  Transformers breaking would be the reason we would be sent back to the stone age.  Some transformers(the really big ones) take a year to make.  Just 1 could take a year to build!  Now think about this.

At a nuclear plant(imaginary one) it might have 10 giant transformers to step the voltage up to transmission voltages(500,000 volts for example) so it can travel very long distances, then it travels in many directions.  Once it gets to where it's going it goes to another substation where 4 transformers step it from 500,000 to 235,000 volts and the line splits in many directions to many different cities.  One line leading from there goes to your city and 10 other cities along it's way.  Each small city it passes has let's say 4 substations each having 2 giant transformers stepping the voltage from 235,000 volts to 14,000 volts which is usable by the small pole mounted transformers.

Back to what I was saying, some transformers take a year to make and just now I described a fake line that has around 100 giant transformers.  I would say a normal power plant has 1000s of giant transformers along it's lines to your house.  Let's just say the Turkey point power plant we use in South Florida has 1000 giant transformers.  So just to keep Miami on and the surrounding areas we need 1000s transformers built to get us back online.

It would be years and years before just South Florida would be back on if every transformer manufacture in the world was building transformers for just us and no one else.  Think about how long it would take to get America on if we had a direct hit from a bad ass solar flare?  We're fucked

On the good side of things I believe we have government organizations that watch for solar flares and will notify power companies to shut down if they think one my hit and cripple the electrical system.  For reasons I don't know off hand if no electricity is flowing through lines the solar flare wouldn't hurt it at all.  So if a flare was going to hit and Turkey Point nuclear facility shut down our electrical system would be undamaged.

Is the true threat from the sun to the power grid solar flares, or rather, is it a large coronal mass ejection? I thought it was the latter. Here's hoping that big sunspot doesn't produce a CME, now...

You are 100% on this one, those transformers are the weak point in the power grid that is most susceptible to damage from a CME.

This is also correct, the CME's are typically caused by solar flares, and typically the larger the flare, the larger potential for a CME, this is not always the case, as the X3 flare of yesterday, did not infact, produce a CME.

I wish it did though, i wanna see some damn auroras!

People that worry about this stuff are stupid. There are millions of other ways that we will actually die from.

You are wayyy more likely to get your house broken into right now and witness your loved ones be raped and then get your throat slit. People never worry about that though. For some reason people dream of some absolutely absurd way that most people will die all at once.

Whatever floats your boats crazy people.

So, let me get this straight. What you're saying here is that, when it comes to transformers, there's more than meets the eye?

Fuck grammar it hurts so bad that i dont care about whether or not my mind is trying to say the things Im actually saying. Ya know?

It's a Transformers(Movie/cartoon/toy) joke.

I am wondering about the facilities that make transformers though. Wouldn't they need power to make them? Without supplied power, then it becomes the chicken and the egg.
Guess you could make some by hand and supply them down the line to the nearest power station.

Crazy shit.

Really you don't need power to make them.  All a transformer is, is rolled copper around an iron core.  When they make them people make them not machines.  They do a layer of copper wire, then some form of paper then another layer and so on.

Also awesome transformer joke sorry it went over my head, I'm sort of tired.

This is pretty ignorant.  A lot of electricity goes into the making of large transformers.  Copper wire doesn't come from the copper wire fairy, and iron cores don't come from the iron core fairy.  The process of turning raw materials into finished transformers takes power every step of the way.

And no...large transformers like that are not wound by hand.

Dumb.  Transformer shops have miles and fucking miles of copper wire.  They could build enough transformers with that to power the other shops that would be needed to build on.  You think they have absolutely no materiel at their disposal to build more? At our yard we have probably 10 extra transformers that would be unaffected by a CME.  Everyone has a few extras.  They would be immediately put in service to power police, hospitals, and the building of more transformers.  Think before you talk.

And no just mineral oil in them.  We soak our tools in some of the old ones to keep them like new.  You could use really anything that isn't flammable and that wouldn't evaporate.

And you may be right, maybe the big ones aren't rolled by hand, but they could if there was no other options.  It's all about ratio. about a 16:1 ratio to step 235,000 to 14,400 volts.  Every one wrap on copper on one side would need 16 on the other windings.

No your still wrong.  Name any factory type job, they all have material in house to do a few jobs.  Why would you think they would be any different?  Do you think when they build the big transformers that take a year they order 1 weeks worth of copper at a time?  lol  They have enough to make shit happen if they need to.
