Giant Fucking Sunspot facing earth, Update, Large X Class Flare! * 1

So, Im a solar physics geek, i check the weather on the sun more than the weather in my town....
Recently there was a GIANT sunspot that rotated into earth facing position, this thing is the biggest sunspot since 2003, and it has the potential for HUGE class X solar flares.

These are the sort of events that could knock the planet back into the stone age, fry the power grid, and just FRY satellites in orbit. they estimate a 55% chance of X class flares, and a 95% chance of lower M class flares today. any one of those could kick off what is called a coronal mass ejection, which would likely bring auroras to the mid latitudes.

the damage to the earths electrical systems and electrical grid would be beyond catastrophic. The extra energy in the system would fry a good portion of transformers and substations, and several studies on the subject have stated that it would take minimum a year and a half to recover from it.

this would mean that major disruptions would occur in utility distribution such as power, water, gas, and transportation infrastructure. The world would grind to a halt. Imagine a major city, such as chicago, with 9 million plus people in its metropolitan area, suddenly no longer able to get water from the tap, food from the store, or heat for their house. Now imagine that in almost every city in the world. And lets also remember, that communication infrastructure, cell phones, satellites, and even land lines, will likely go down as well. 

so, the term stone age, while not a hundred percent accurate, is a very good analogy to describe how starkly different the world could become over night

research the carrington event, and the potential for another carrington class event. The sun is a giant ball of Plasma powered nuclear fission, dont underestimate it.

Well, I poke on to spaceweather.com every now and again to keep tabs on things. Yes, it feels like a loaded gun is pointed at us, though I guess I'm glad it's not on the equator of the sun, at least? :smile:

It's pretty stunning how much insight we've gained in the last 40 years, but especially the last ten, on the sun and the patterns/cycles of activity it creates. For a lump mass of raw energy, it's stupid how complex and self-organized it seems to be.
