Micropore Tape
    #20709694 -

I have two questions I have PF cakes with no very on the top just tin foil would it be safe to take the tin foil off and put micropore tape on instead, I figured the micropore tape would allow better GE and they seem to be stalling but didn't want to risk contaminating them. Also  I put micropore tape on my rye jars with tin foil over top and PC'd them the tape looked a little funny afterwards do you think it will still allow GE?

You are supposed to take the tin foil off during colonization anyway, no need for microspore tape.

As long as you added a dry verm layer you should be fine. But either way, take that tin foil off. Your jars are probably stalling because of lack of GE.

I don't think you are supposed to PC with the tape on, just foil. I would either replace that tape or just remove it altogether.

There is not a dry verm layer on top

Why not?

I'm not sure what to do in this case then. I don't get why you didn't put a dry verm layer on. Unless you have a rubber band around your tin foil it shouldn't really impact GE.

How long have they been colonizing? If it's been a while longer than average they might have a bacteria problem.

I guess I would take the foil off and add another layer of micropore tape. At least give them some GE...though the chance of contamination here is pretty high.

You may try changing the tape in a SAB. Make sure you use the dry layer of verm on the top of your cakes next time.

If it can breathe beneath the foil it's good. So long as things don't fall on top of the lid. And the foil will keep that from happening

I'm not saying foil is a filter. I'm saying if he has no verm on top, loosely fitted foil is better than nothing.  OP bought that jar premade. That's the first mistake.

:whathesaid:

I dont know if you're fucked.. But Don't use tape for pc'ing. Use polyfil or SFD's or SHIP's. I know this cuz my last pc cycle I'd thought I'd use tape n it was moist from the cook n I didn't trust it. That was with tin foil too. Also, since u have no verm layer, opening em in open air is sure to contaminate them. Just  :2cents:

rather use nothing instead of tape. how you gonna pull poly through a puncture hole? why use a SFD when dry verm is your filter?

foil is to keep water out of the jar during the steam sterilization and comes off when you take the jars out of the kettle.

It has a lid just tin foil over top but no filter over the holes, they seem to be looking good so far without it but seems to be taking a while and wasn't sure if the foil is stoping GE and if tape would work better for it or if its to late and just wait and see what happens,

I put tape on a few for shits and giggles just to see what happens till I find out a little more information figured if a few jars went south it wouldn't be that big of a deal
