Can I sleep less at night if I nap?
    #20697552 -

So here's my predicament. I work at 6am everyday during the week, 9 hour days. This means if I want a solid night sleep to get me through the day I have to go to bed at 9pm, which kinda sucks because all my friends don't work a rooster shift like I do rendering me basically unable to chill with homies on weeknights lest I stay up too late or only chill for like an hour or two.

Given the circumstances, if I were to say, take a 90 minute nap after work could I stay up two hours later than usual and keep my energy level up the day after on a consistent basis?

Any experience or advice on this matter is greatly appreciated.

I nap quite a bit because of a similar sleep schedule. I work at 5 in the morning to about 1:30-2:00Pm, but have to pick my wife up from work at 11 pm, so I need to take a nap at some point otherwise I'm hurting the next day. I'd say if you're going to nap and interrupt a full sleep, you should tack on an hour to your total sleep for each day to make up for it. So instead of getting a total of 8 hours sleep per day, you should shoot for 9. This to feel completely rested and alive anyway.

When I nap during the day -- and, if I nap for only an hour or so -- it affects my sleep at night to some extent (however -- it is to a fairly minimal extent).  Basically, napping for about an hour or so during the day will almost always cause me to wake up once or twice during my sleep at night (with each time I wake up lasting for only about 10 minutes and requiring me to smoke at least a few puffs of a cigarette before I can fall back asleep).  Also -- it does not benefit the next day as far as rest goes and -- rather -- it makes me feel less rested the next day.

And -- the longer I nap during the day, the worse-off my sleep is at night (and my feeling of being rested the next day is quite a bit worse as well).  If I nap for 2 - 3 hours during the day, my sleep at night is moderately worse, with me waking up 3 to 4 times at night and my next day being that much worse than a 1-hour nap.

If I nap for 4+ hours during the day, my night's sleep is completely ruined, with me waking up pretty much at every hour (and -- sometimes -- sleeping for less than an hour each time before waking back up again) and -- as far as the next day goes -- I feel completely miserable and unrested entirely.

Bottom-line -- napping at all during the day always messes up my sleep at night and makes me feel more unrested the next day than if I sleep at night without having napped during the day (and the longer I nap, the worse-off I am when trying to sleep at night and wanting to feel rested the next day).

Take of that what you will.

That's a pretty cool schedule considering you come home during the daylight and the rush isn't so bad in town

for naps though always aim for 2-3 hours

If you only sleep 1 hour then that means you didn't need it and it wont' really do anything for you, but naps are a lot more natural then sleeping 8 hours a day, I know on the weekends I like to sleep like 10-12 hours each night lol
