79% of Americans want Campaign Finance Reform, Senate Republicans say Fuck You * 1
    #20565192 -

Reuters article

Despite a vast majority on both sides of our political spectrum wanting to get big money out of politics, the GOP has decided once again to throw the will of the people by the wayside.

As we can see, money being thrown at elections has increased exponentially since the Supreme Court ruling, with a majority of it going to conservative campaigns.

How do you feel about Senate Republicans ignoring the people theyre supposed to represent, in order to grease the ballot box?

Great question!
I would love to hear the responses from our republican/conservative friends.
I'd imagine being a conservative you'd not want that kind of thing?

Well, as long as our legislators are OK with the citizenry rejecting laws and the enforcement thereof because any legislative power exercised by a corrupted electoral process is implicitly illegitimate. Maybe I've being over-simplistic with that. Maybe I'm cutting to the bone with that.

So what kind of 'Campaign Finance Reform' are we talking about?  There are all kinds of regulations and rules on campaign finance at the Federal Level.

And if I remember correctly in the 2000 elections, McCain and (Nader?) where really big on campaign finance reform but where vehemently opposed by the ACLU and other big special interests.

In the 2008 pres campaign contributions to Obama made McCain look like a Pauper.

I rather agree with some kind of reform, but what kind?  After all, in DC you have 536 Whores and Compulsive Spenders, including the president, and I don't think any of them are going to try real hard to stop the gravy train from rollin'.

So please list some ideas, and ways to clean up campaign finance reform, because that is such a broad term its hard to get ones arms around.

Big spending Obama? LMFA OFF!

Government spending under President Obama has grown at a slower rate than it did under any president since Dwight D. Eisenhower was in office six decades ago, according to an analysis from Bloomberg. That may not jibe with the conservative complaints that Obama has overseen a massive growth in government spending, but it’s true!

Oh those conservatives and their "facts"

Gotta love it, gotta laugh. Thanks Starfire!

I'm not sure what you expect Congress to do about it.  There are already strong campaign finance laws in place.  There is no way that Congress can regulate money spent independently of campaigns, or so-called, "soft money".  The only way to do that would be to change the Constitution in a way that would eviscerate the First Amendment.  If that ever happened, it'd be the beginning of the end of democracy in America.

Don't try to play statistics games.  'Rate' is exactly that--its in percentage.  Now look at this graph.  Who fucking spent more?

Game over.  Don't you need to get sheared today?

It's quite a predicament, isn't it?

It's extremely difficult for conservatives to be elected without soft money, so it's probably hard for conservative voters to take a stand against it.

Lately, I've been of a mind that the SCOTUS Buckley v Valeo ruling in '76 was the beginning of the end for democracy in America. That's the ruling that said it was legit that money == speech. This was not the case for the first two centuries, during which money == corruption.

Because people have the right to free speech, particularly when it's political speech.  Without amending the constitution, it'd be impossible to place any meaningful restrictions on political advertising.

If the Constitution is amended to allow the government to place limitations on political speech, that will mean that those in power choose what political speech is and isn't allowed.  That weapon will invariably be used to expand/protect the power of those who already hold it and to exclude the voice of dissent.

Seems to me you could restrict money without restricting speech, but there lies the difference between how most Americans think and how the Supreme Court and Senate Republicans think.

This opinion, which many Americans share, is a knee-jerk reaction to an issue.  The more one thinks on the problem, it becomes apparent that restricting money spent on speech is restricting speech.

This nation has hundreds of millions of voters, and it is impossible to reach all of those voters.  It is impossible to reach even .001% of those voters with a message without spending money to do so.  For the marketplace of ideas to function in a nation of 300 million people, ideas have to be widely published.  Frankly, that was true when this nation was founded, but the problem is much larger today.

Whether it's a guy standing in front of the courthouse with a sign or Tony Alamo printing millions of flyers, money has to be spent to get a message out.  That's the way modern society works.

Agreed.

But most Americans would agree on restricting money, not outlawing it.

I strongly disagree that's a knee jerk reaction, and don't know how you correlated the two?

Years ago, you couldn't reach the masses, but in the digital age, you can certainly reach the masses easier, and with less money than you could in the past.

Your vote is your free speech - money, donations, in my opinion is not.

As free speech is paramount in this country, I feel just fine about it.

--------------------
You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity. What one person receives without working for another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for that my dear friend is the beginning of the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it. ~ Adrian Rogers

Campaign contributions are a completely different thing.  Those are already heavily limited by government regulations.
