The Player http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Player_(film)
stupendously awesome film; intriguing, exciting and whimsical. it's a story about a producer of films (or film exec, to be more precise) getting in too deep, as it were, (never watch THAT particular film LOL) with his decision making... and of course... murder.
so good.
Double Indemnity http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double_Indemnity_(film)
this one was as good a film noir as i've seen, nice story, nice shooting. i mean, it's kinda cliche now, but back in the day, it was pretty dark. the acting is great too.
The Children Are Watching Us http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Children_Are_Watching_Us
and early foray into the NeoRealism Italian film period. using non-actors, this film portrays and everyman's kinda of story. might be a bit too deliberate in that sense, for most people, but it's quite enjoyable if you like the idea of a true to life story, being done by regular people, and having it turn out quite great.
All The Presidents Men http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_the_President%27s_Men_(film)
i caught this from beginning to end once on TV,... i was lucky. i got to fully enjoy the breadth of this excellent thriller, and it certainly helped that i was tripping shit on acid, and just finished peeping The Shining on the same date, tripping fuck as well. this one is a must see. MUST. one MUST watch this movie at least once. it's so dire, and on the edge of your seat, and with SUCH a good plot and story, one cannot regret seeing it. excellent performances, too, by Redford and Hoffman. and speaking of Robert Redford...
All Is Lost http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_Is_Lost
this is his newest film. and it is a JUGGERNAUT of a good piece of filmmaking. it's dire as fucking dire as can be. and it's subtle, and it's an incredible concept, shot brilliantly, and acted brilliantly, with almost no dialogue whatsoever.
Night of the Hunter http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Night_of_the_Hunter_(film)
this is an oldie but goodie. it's pacing is excellent, and it's truthfully quite frightening (not scary but still frightening). the river scene is one of my favorite scenes of all time. i'll post a decent quality piece of it here. plus Robert Mitchum fucking rocks.
My Own Private Idaho http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Own_Private_Idaho
this one is a bit fuckered. Keanu Reeves kills it, as does River Phoenix, the narcoleptic sleeze of the road. this movie is an endeavor. it's twisted, kinda hard to follow, it's particular sex scene is so disturbing and brilliant at once, and the dialogue is ridiculous, cause like the droogs from A Clockwork Orange, the characters in this one all take on a certain "unreal" personality. it's a film for ... adults. definitely. very good and very well done. and a bit (understatement) downtrodden.
Leaving Las Vegas http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leaving_Las_Vegas
this one is Nick Cages best. bar none, save Raising Arizona (if you haven't seen this one... do yourself a favor... grab some weed, and prepare to laugh your face off) but this one... this one is a serious fuckin' movie. Cages character wants to drinking himself into oblivion. he befriends a prostitute and begins a journey of debauchery and love. with the booze and his limelight, the great portrayal of Elizabeth Shue, as his confidant. this movie, again, for adults. not pretty in the slightest. nor clever (unlike My Private Idaho). though let that not do it a disservice, it's just too... REAL... to be clever. which kinda makes it clever. so good.
Belle de Jour http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belle_de_Jour_(film)
a film of hallucination and fantasy. a bit of a chickflick, but regardless, if you can handle the delicate pacing... it's a great and mysterious film, by a master filmmaker Luis Buñuel, whom has made many a great film, along with the aforementioned Un Chien Andalou (which was in coordination and LED by Salvador Dali, as well, to note) and several other GREATS. but all of them are quite "experimental" in it's story telling, and all quite fucked up. films such as...

La Belle Noiseuse http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Belle_Noiseuse
another chickflick, but if you like A: painting B: beautiful shoots and C: a good story, one would like this film. delicate pacing, not for everyone.
on the topic of chick flicks that are ACTUALLY GOOD.
The Unbearable Lightness of Being http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Unbearable_Lightness_of_Being_(film)
this one is brilliant. great story, in depth, romantic but also with a flavor of political strife. it's based off the novel of the same name, so you can assure yourself it's a "deep" film. not for everyone, certainly. impressive though, for the ladies... and BETTER certainly then The English Patient (overrated film).
The Crying Game http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Crying_Game
anyone not seen this? WATCH IT! and BEWARE.
PS: almost forgot Last Year at Marienbad http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Last_Year_at_Marienbad
this movie is AMAZING,... one to watch stoned. but it's deliberate pacing might be to slow for some... but it's a perfect film. it's like a dream, but more so like a disintegration of reality... it goes into depths of love (as a subtext) but more importantly memory. this is one for the senses. amazing.
Paris, Texas http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paris,_Texas_(film)
a humble film, about humble origins. an amnesiac finds himself wandering the desert... he tries to get in touch with his brother, in order to find his identity. touching movie. slow pacing, not for everyone.
In The Realm Of The Senses http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_the_Realm_of_the_Senses
this movie is brilliant. it's touching, frightening and disturbed, all at once... plus, it's basically a really excellent... porn.
must watch.
