If you have Netflix all of those except for Master of the Flying Guillotine and probably the Warriors Two + Snake in Eagle's Shadow should be on there.


....and cuz they're pretty close to the same genre 13 Assassins is pretty awesome. For the first half of the movie nothing particularly interesting happens aside from the bad guy killing and raping a bunch of people to show how evil he is while the 13 prepare a village for an ambush on him and TWO HUNDRED of his men...and the 2nd half is one continuous fight scene of the 13 fighting the 200. It lasts for over an hour. Holy fucking shit.



The Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale is a hellishly long (complete version = 4 hours. Cut version = 2.5) movie produced by John Woo (!!!!) about indigenous Taiwanese tribesmen fighting against the occupying Japanese. To date I've still never seen more graphic decapitations in any other movie.



Red Cliff is another movie produced by John Woo of similar length to the above in both the complete and cut versions that's about the Three Kingdoms period in China (Wei, Wu, and Shu). If you're not a history buff you may recognize it better as 'it's about those guys from Dynasty Warriors'

dude, Netflix is ok, but, my Canadian flix is gay and probably won't have it. (and i don't wanna do the IP switch because i'm tech illiterate, and i'll probably just frustrate me)

but i will DL em at some point. this is gonna be my main stockade of to-watch-films so when i'm in the mood for some new Martial Art movies (i've seen the classics but not these newer ones :yesnod:) i'll be checkin' em out. they all look and sound dope.

Glad to hear the excessive lengths of time I've spent watching kung fu movies have gone to good use. I apparently got Tito (The Phleg/Pyrate999) to start having kung fu related dreams recently after forcing him to watch Dragon despite him admitting that kung fu movies usually don't do it for him.

Don't Look Now

really, this movie is NOT scary. by today's standards, this is MILD at the MOST. but... BUT... if you can take the deliberate pacing... this film is one beautiful film of Venice and a delicate story of ghosts and paranoia. not for everyone but... i really thought it LOOKED and SOUNDED great. and for a low budget, too, it came out great.

After Life

a newer-ish film. this movie is so dead on with it's concept and display of nuance in story telling and character development, and is SOOO good. it's about people crossing over into the afterlife, and the people running the show up there giving the passing a chance to save ONE permanent memory to replay up in Heaven. touching. truthful. slightly sad, but ultimately empowering film. this one is slightly rare, but so worth it. i was lucky to see it, personally, i think. i might have to buy this one one day.

La Jetée

this movie is super short. despite it's low-key nature, anyone can watch this and get some "oomph" out of it. it's a weird one though, which is why it's awesome. (obligatory 12 Monkeys reference) it's about a time traveler. can't say much more then that, other then it's a movie of stills. that's right, still shots make up this film, and it is ingenious. a MUST SEE.

Sans Soleil

Blood Simple

everybody knows the Coen bros make awesome movies (No Country for Old Men, Barton Fink, Raising Arizona (LOLOLOLOLOL), Miller's Crossing, Fargo ect) all classics in their right. but this was their debut... and this film is CLASSIC Coen bros. a indelible showcase of visual delight and a suspenseful almost lampooning story of real life proportions. though this one is more serious then their usual repertoire. it's about  a husband and wife and hired-killer, nuff said.

everyone probably knows this one but it must be mentioned. the film is genius. and as far as direction goes... gotta be my favorite Hitchcock i've seen. i mean, it's all within the one apartment and it's back alley view of the other's around it. so visually stunning, and just that makes it worth it for anyone.

lol, those dreams must rock. :lol: but yeah, certain kung fu might not do for certain peeps, but there are just so many amazing Choreographed fights to see, and they are brilliant to watch. why pass 'em up if you get the chance to see em? who doesn't think Martial Arts are at the very least... AWESOME AS FUCK?

i have D.W. Griffiths Intolerance and Birth of a Nation. haven't watched them yet though. which is the best, Burke, in your humble opinion?

The Children Are Watching Us

MUST. one MUST watch this movie at least once. it's so dire, and on the edge of your seat, and with SUCH a good plot and story, one cannot regret seeing it. excellent performances, too, by Redford and Hoffman. and speaking of Robert Redford...

All Is Lost

My Own Private Idaho

Keanu Reeves kills it, as does River Phoenix, the narcoleptic sleeze of the road. this movie is an endeavor. it's twisted, kinda hard to follow, it's particular sex scene is so disturbing and brilliant at once, and the dialogue is ridiculous, cause  like the droogs from A Clockwork Orange, the characters in this one all take on a certain "unreal" personality. it's a film for ... adults. definitely. :yesnod: very good and very well done. and a bit (understatement) downtrodden.

Leaving Las Vegas

this one is Nick Cages best. bar none, save Raising Arizona (if you haven't seen this one... do yourself a favor... grab some weed, and prepare to laugh your face off) but this one... this one is a serious fuckin' movie. Cages character wants to drinking himself into oblivion. he befriends a prostitute and begins a journey of debauchery and love. with the booze and his limelight, the great portrayal of Elizabeth Shue, as his confidant. this movie, again, for adults. not pretty in the slightest. nor clever (unlike My Private Idaho). though let that not do it a disservice, it's just too... REAL... to be clever. which kinda makes it clever. :lol: so good.

Belle de Jour

Intolerance is incredible on a grand scale, in regards to sets, extras, costuming, etc.  But Birth is a better story.

well, dang, to me, the story is not exactly paramount to a good picture. (see Wavelength) the set design (less so than,...) the pictures and the sounds are KEY to me. story comes as a close second to picture/sound. so i must say, Intolerance seems to be the obvious choice, but considering it's so long, i dunno. :lol:

both look gorgeous from what i've seen though. damn, probably gonna have a D.W. Griffith night, sometime. Birth looks like some fucked up shit, though. :yesnod: hangings and fires... and... whooopp!1

i finished watching American Beauty. if anyone hasn't seen this dark-tinged sweet apple of a film, you'd be doing yourself a favor to watch it on Netflix. people say it's overrated, sometimes... fuck that. this movie is a one of a kind. what can one take from this movie? that love, no matter how deep it's hidden, is there in everyone. always. you just have to see it.

i know, but i've heard it told. i'm like, wha? it's gorgeous. not because of any particular pictures (cept the rose ceiling and the rain at the end) but it's gorgeous in it's story and characters. the Fittz kid is one of my favorite, almost nondescript, characters. and Burnham is awesome, or at least, he turns awesome. and seeing him comfort his daughters friend at the end is one of the best moments ever, in a film. (counting lots, but still, one of)
