Do they work if their not submerged? i need to keep a constant heat coz i have a very cold house, ive got a layer of perlite so there isnt any water to submerge the heater
what happens if its not submerged?

perlite is for humidity
its for a terrarium (fruiting)
its a bog standered aquarium heater - it does say "submersible" on the packaging and its got a thermal sensor
i wouldnt of thought it gets hot enough to melt anything because they have plastic heater guard, so all it would do really is just heat up the air and inside the terrarium?

what you want to do is. get anoother tub the exact same size as that one. fill that tub 1/4 of the way full with water. set ur heater at 75 degrees, submerse it in the water. put the other terrarium on top of that. understand?

yeah i understand but i had this box spare i dont want to buy a new one, what does the water do with the heater? if it has a thermal sensor wouldnt it just keep the inside temperature at the set setting? i assumed that because its designed to keep tropical fish warm then the recommendations are going to be for fish so you would keep it submersed then??

im not understanding. are u using a rubbermaid? does ur aquarium heater have a themometor setting? like 75,78,82,? if not u need to get one that does. u will have to get two rubbermaid tubs for this to work.
Don't turn on the heater unless it is submersed in water. read the directions on the box.

i don't use an incubator for fruiting but i would if my house didn't stay at 75. ofcourse ur tub would either have to be clear or u would have to get some kind of lighting going on because cubenesis always go for the light.

its a plastic aquarium style box, used for small pets e.g. hamsters, lizards etc
It has a layer of moist perlite on on the bottom
the only source of heat it has at the moment is the radiator which is on a timer for the house heating, when the house isnt being heated the room temperature will drop considerably - below 60 F!!!
the heater i want to use is a Tronic 50Watt aquarium heater with a Tronic heater guard. It doesnt say anywhere that you should have it submerged when switched on
Can you tell me what exactly the water does to a heater? why is it essential that the heater is underwater? i dont quiet see how having it underwater would make any difference, its designed for fish so its instructions will be for fish e.g. if it isnt fully submerged it wont give an accurate reading of the water temperature so your fish will die! but im not growing fish

its only going to work when it is submersed in water. i mean there is no other way. it couldn't even put off that much heat to keep the air at the desired temp.
go buy some rubbermaids.
oh and mushrooms won't grow if the temp is not right. just like fish will die if the temps not right. did u check out that link.

so basically its not powerfull enough? you have to have it in water coz its easier to heat up?
I know mushrooms dont grow if the temperature isnt right because thats whats happening with mine lol its got an un-even pinset and the pins show no signs of growth during the day when the central heating is off and the humidity is being messed up because the heat isnt constant.
I did look at the link and ill use that method if i cant find an easier method.
what are rubbermaids? i know their boxes but i havent seen the brand in stores

oh shit you live in the uk. im sorry. i don't know where the hell you find that over there. ur basicly looking for something that will hold water. tupperware. big plastic tubs. we have loads of it over here.

u could use those but u might have to cut the top of it and drape clear plastic or glass over. so it can recieve light. and of course fan three times a day.

mate its easily fixed:
get a spaghetti jar thats in the shape of a bottle like this:
fill with water and add heater like this:
without water they crack!
they can melt plastic!

I used this for my cakes too. Here's what I did...
I painted the outside of the aquarium with black spray paint to control the light. I just opened the lid a little for light.
For heat I put an electric heating pad under it. I put the whole works on top of a big cutting board so it wouldn't mark up my counter top. You'll want to watch this set up though. I had a tough time with the humidity. with the heat on the bottom you need to watch to make sure you have plenty of water with your perlite.
you put aquarium heaters in H2O because they heat the surrounding water. They're not too efficient with providing radian heat through the air, which your shrooms will need.

ive got it setup now in a pint glass, theres quiet alot of condensation because the room temp is damn cold! im using a cheap sticky-back aquarium thermometer stuck the the terrerium and the temperature is reading at 66 F but the inside air feels warm and humid so theres obvioulsy a difference between the inside temp and the terrerium temp (the heater is set to 81 F) the growth of the pins has rapidly increased aswell so im guessing the problems solved.
now that ive got this glass of water with a heater in there would it eliminate the need to spray the side of the terrerium?
