Your cakes certainly aren't spent yet neverwhere. I assume you are still on the first flush. If the dark blue is bothering you and looks like it may be rotting, then you can just cut the whole section off after the flush. Even if you don't want to cut a slice off the top, you should pick off any rotting blobs or pieces of shrooms after each flush. The mycelium will recover there and produce more shrooms. The cakes will be spent when they run out of nutrients. They may stop producing if they run out of water, but this is easy to fix. You can use the straw tek to rehydrate your cakes and get the most out of them. I don't even bother with straws. I just take a 1/4" drill bit and make a hole about half way through the cake. Once or twice a day I use an eyedropper to fill the hole up with water. Works for me.

As for the mushrooms running into eachother, this doesnt really matter. If a mushroom is growing to close to another cake or the side of your terrarium, then you can turn the cake so that the mushroom is pointing in a direction with more space.

About the straw tek, does it matter what kind of water used and should it be sterilized first? I've heard you can contaminate the cake from the inside if your not carefull doing that.

I use tap water and have no problems, but if you are paranoid, then use distilled water

i have a little blade that i can use to cut off portions of the cake if I need to. I know it needs to be sterilized, but is there anything else that I need to do or can I just hack away?

I have hacked off about a quarter inch off of the top of one of my cakes and a little around the sides at the end of a flush with a kitchen knife. I didn't sterilize the blade, just washed it with soap and water. This presented me with no problems. The cake did not become contaminated and the second flush started about a day later than the rest of my cakes, but produced the same yield.
Cakes recover very well as long as you have enough moisture, you don't need to be too fussy with them.
