So I was at work, and we were doing some work on a large oleander hedge a lady had.  Our boss wanted it thinned out to reinvigorate some growth, so I go behind the hedge with my chainsaw and am selectively removing stems.  There's a lot of blackberry brambles, but I've got on long sleeves and chainsaw chaps, so I don't worry about it too much.  I was at it for about a half hour (it was a big hedge) and moved on to another in the long row of plants.  Start cutting, and after awhile I notice a couple of pricks on my arm.  Didn't think too much of it, just figured I'd hit a blackberry bramble.  I kept cutting.  I just wanted to get done with it.  Then I notice some pricks on my other arm.  Then one on my neck.  I look down at myself and I am fucking COVERED in yellow jackets.  I dropped the saw still running, ran about twenty feet along the back of the hedge, then said fuck it and dove through the hedge to land on the lawn.  Ripped my long sleeve off and threw it on the ground, then struggled to get the chaps off while running away.  It was a few years ago, so I can't remember the exact number of stings, but it was close to 30.  I went and picked up the shirt after about 20 minutes of cursing, pacing, and chain smoking, and there were still four of the little bastards on there, just stinging away at the shirt.

XXXX yellow jackets.

No chainsaw please...

http://xtremehorticulture.blogspot.com/2012/07/proper-way-to-prune-and-hedge-oleanders.html

I was once stung by yellow jackets, and while they typically do not leave their stinger sacs within you, one of them did so with me.  While within the E.R. room, the nurse refused to remove it, regardless of how much I insisted upon it, claiming that the doctor had to do it.  Like a fool, I listened to her, even though I had less than pleasant words for her the entire time, to say the least.  The doctor was an hour getting to me, but when he managed, told me the nurse was brainless.  He explained that via her lack of immediate action in removing it, she had caused my body to take on more venom than most (the entire sac, in addition to the other stings).  He explained that it continues to pump venom, and the body is like a tea cup, which can hold only so much of it, until it overflows, for life.  He insisted that due to all, I must now carry the needle.  Neither of us had kind words for the nurse after that, and I hope that she was terminated for it all, because it was prolonged pain.  I was only stung by five, but I am very petite, so I felt like an 18 wheeler truck had actually impacted me at the time of the stings.  Fortunately I run quickly, and was able to get inside a screened porch, but they did the same with my clothes I noticed upon retrieval, as well.

I was stung by a wasp in the eyelid one time, Vinsue, while riding my bike; that was painful.  I hope that you feel better soon.

Beeotch! (get it?)  I'm an arborist!  I know my shit.  It was an informal hedge and I was removing like 3-4" thick stems.  When I've gotta do 100ft+ of that shit I'm definitely using a chainsaw.

And, actually, you can do a kinda shitty job of maintaining a formal hedge with a chainsaw if you forget to throw the hedgers on the truck.  Cuts look a little rough at first, but once it starts growing in again you can't tell the difference.

It's hardly wasting time when somebody is willing to pay your standard labor rate for the work.  Could the client have gotten a landscaping company to do it for cheaper?  Almost certainly.  But why would we tell them that?  Money is money.

I really don't appreciate this implication that I was butchering them, either.  Oleanders are a super hardy species, and what we did didn't look bad.  Perfectly acceptable pruning practices.  As an Arborist with a Bachelor of Science in Urban Forestry acting under the direction of a Board Certified Master Arborist I don't really know where you get off telling me how to prune.

Wasps, hornets, and yellowjackets suck. Unlike honeybees, their stingers are not barbed, so they can sting you as many times as they like, and as you well know they love to fucking sting.

I've only been stung twice:

Once by a yellowjacket when I was like 7 at summer camp. Bastard landed on my arm and just stung me. Fucker.

Once when I caught a honeybee and squished it. It was dead, but I was only 7 and I stung myself with its stinger. Stupid me. There used to be so many honeybees when I was a kid I'd catch tons in a jar, keep them in my room and watch them a bit before letting them go.

I was also dry bitten by one of my old pet tarantulas once. Wasn't paying attention when I was handling it. Sank its fangs into my finger. Felt like a pair of pliers with thumb tacks on them sinking into my hand. Could have been worse.
