the death of liberty
    #2040140 - 10/24/03 03:32 PM (20 years, 5 months ago)

you could say that the concept of personal freedom
and liberty, globally, reached its zenith on september
10, 2001.

since that day, we have seen the realms of indivual
privacy and liberty encroached upon by governments
who claim that these things we must sacrifice for the
greater public good.

in the united states' new campaign against terrorism, a
multitude of foreign governments have been provided
financial aid:

uzbekistan, georgia, pakistan, kazakhstan, kyrgyz republic,
tajikistan, turkmenistan, nigeria, turkey, nepal and the list
goes on.

these are countries with grave human rights abuses that
have now been given financial freedom to continue to
oppress their populations in the name of fighting terror.

with each additional dollar of foreign aid, handouts "from
governments, to governments, for governments", the united
states frees up another dollar that can be used for the
continued terrorisation of their citizens.

governments such as those in china, indonesia, algeria,
egypt, belarus, malaysia, russia, cuba, zimbabwe, liberia
and uganda are invoking 9/11 in much of the same was
as our current administration has in an effort to enact
legislation to ensure the continued oppression of their
populations.

but by all measures, john ashcroft and his patriot act
look like benjamin franklin and the declaration of
independence in contrast to the reactionary limits to
personal freedom and liberty that these countries are
imposing on their (sometimes marginalized) populations
in the name of the global war on terror.

these governments have found it easy, in today's global
political environment, to label certain minority and religious
groups terrorists as a means to legitimize what would
otherwise be considered genocide and out right tyranny.

is mankind, as a whole, digressing?

is the concept of liberty forever changed in our society?

"The precedents that have been established around the
globe since 9/11 will continue to haunt hundreds of millions
of people long after Osama bin Laden has gone to hell...Over
a billion people have seen at least some of their rights and
liberties sacrificed on the antiterrorism alter - or face greater
risks of unjustified arrest and detention in their daily lives -
or face greater likelihood of government surveillance and
government intrusion in their personal lives.

- James Bovard

It is interesting to note that liberals hate personal freedom
and liberty.

Some day they will get together and then doom.

It's not ignorant. I've seen many a libbie say outright that individual rights are moot.

I never think of liberalism as outright communism.

I'll say a prayer for your liberty tonite.

but I fear it may not be enough to stem
the rising tide of subjugation.

Use your prayers on someone that appreciates them. Let the rest reap their just "rewards".

One of America's greatest problems is that nobody really cares about anybody else's rights except their own.

That is true even about most of the people that come to this forum.

Yep, the concept of liberty is falling by the wayside.. actually, it is being forceably pushed out of the car while traveling at a high rate of speed. Strap in and prepare for the ride. It's gonna get a lil bumpy.

The problem is that nobody cares about people's rights anymore, not even their own. Especially true of the very vocal minority that we know and "love" in this forum

afoaf, read this:
http://coursesa.matrix.msu.edu/~hst306/documents/huron.html

It rocks the casbah. Know that we are just part of a dying cycle that started long ago and crested in ways nobody ever could have imagine. Atleast, that is my take on it. Your mileage my vary.

This is an interesting theory on what "liberal" is and how it has been co-opted
