air pump too loud, help

i just set up my pmp but theres a small problem. the air pump is sortof loud. its a double air pump for tanks from 150-200L. i cant work out how to make it quieter. if anyone has any ideas let me know. also, should i put my pf cakes straight on the hydroton or should i put them on lids. ive read about peopld doing both, which is better?

You could wrap it in a towel or something like that. I do that with the one on my fish tank. Not alot else you can do.

i tried that and it made no difference whatsoever. there has to be something i can do about it. i pulled it apart to see why it was so loud and it looks like the little 'lungs' are making the noise from a screw hitting plastic when it pumps. i tried to soften the impact by getting a hot glue gun and dabbing some glue on the screw but when i turned it on the glue came straight off. i might cut up an earplug and superglue a little square to the plastic, it sounds like it would work. what do you think?

The only thing you can really do is just get a different pump.
Tetra makes really quite pumps.
I know that involves spending more money, but other than that there is no way to make it quiter.

take the screw out and file the end off so it has clearence. easy fixed.

i wish. the way it works is like this. the screw is there to hold a little rubber sac onto a piece of metal with a magnet on one end. the sac then connects (air tight) to a little pocket that has some tubing running to the holes on the outside. when you turn it on an electromagnet moves the other magnet side to side making the rubber sac move in and out which makes the air come out. im not sure if youll be able to picture that but its the best way i can explain it. so the screw cant be taken out because it wouldnt work otherwise.

take the screw out....file off the excess length(of the screw) then put the bastard back in.

I have the same problem buth i onley have my dual pump on during daytime so i can speep if you try that youl gett used to the noice quite fast i dont hear it anymore. And it needent be on 24/7 mine is off while i sleep and i gett pretty good resaults anyway

ah, i see what youre getting at now. but ive just found out that that isnt the problem. its really pissing me off, i cant make it shut up! if i cant work something out within two days im going to HAVE to buy a new one. so what about my other question, can any one shed some light on it?

ive got no real problem with the noise myself but i constantly have people over and i dont want ANYONE to find out about it.

An option would be a filter box. The pump would be inside of the box, so the noise levels would be dampened a bit. The filter box also promotes cleaner air out of the pump.

What I do is put a loud fan near my grow area, the buzz of the fan drowns out the buzz of the pump.

if you gunna buy a new one why dont you just set up a diff humidifier the cool mist ones are way better and you cant hear em do some research on em you can get cool mist humidifiers at walmart and tubing to go with it to connect to your grow chamber for about 20 dollars
