take it apart and see whats causing the noise, aquarium airpumps are usually pretty quiet.

Most sound is caused through misalignment of the oscillating metal piece. Just bend it back into place and you're set.

The only thing you would accomplish with suspending your pump with rubber bands is stopping any noise caused from the pump vibrating onto the surface its on.

use one of those mounting brackets that you use to mount personal cd players on the dash of your car. They have suspension,so the cd doesnt skip, mayne that would work enough.

or a hammer would silent it.

i just meant that maybe its so loud because its cheaply made.I had one that was somewhat loud, but it didnt matter nor did i care, then i got a more expensive one when the first 1 died and the differance in the noise was crazy.

Put in in a shoebox and line the inside of the box with some sound dampening material.

Poke a few holes in the box and fill them with polyfill.

now you have a jury rigged silencer, with built-in ghetto filtration.

lol butternut.

if your air pump works anything like my pc's water pump it will have a rotating plastic propeller inside mine had some slack to allow anything that might get caught in it through without breaking it what i did was put a little super glue on the axis to the propeller since they both turn it wont cause problems and it removed the slack my pump had and now its totally silent.

hope you know what i mean

Later NoG

Mine's an old one from the 80's; and to make it more quiet, I put it on top of a leather glove.  I have an airstone and stick it in a milk bottle with a water/peroxide mix.  That way it also provides a little humidity in addition to air exchange.
