Spy Camera In Rental Property?
    #20258272 -

Is it illegal to have spy camera in the ceiling in a rental property? I've heard nightmare stories from my friends who rented a house out to have the tenants steal chandeliers, faucets, etc

I'm thinking of buying a small cabin on 5 acres and don't want that to happen to me.

I would obviously do a background check and get a large security deposit, but I'd love to check a spy camera once a day to make sure there's not some moron punching holes in the wall and burning the place down

You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity. What one person receives without working for another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for that my dear friend is the beginning of the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it. ~ Adrian Rogers

Even if it's not illegal, it's FUCKED up. You're a landlord, not a damn baby sitter. If they punch a hole in the wall, you can recover the costs through court. It's the way the landlord business works, and 9/10 you'll get more than the damages were worth anyway, plus any court costs involved. What could possibly compel you to record the very people you're renting to?

If they are stealing chandeliers and stuff, you can recoup the cost. If they destroy the carpet, you can recoup the cost. Just be smart about how you write your lease up, don't degrade yourself to this DEGENERATE spying shit.

Lol, totally illegal and invasion of privacy. just do a background check and check in on the tenants every few months. You also have to give 24hrs notice that you are coming.

I would hate to have you as a landlord. Security deposit is based on half the monthly rent.
If I found a spy camera in a place I was renting I would fucking sue my landlord and win.

I mean HOLY FUCK dude, I've had some snakeish landlords in the past, but this would take the fucking cake. I'd go out of my fucking way to see your ass in jail if you pulled this shit on me.

Thing is alot of the people who rent houses in this area are winter skiers and go to another state as soon as they're done renting. Taking people to court that don't live in the same state is a massive pain in the ass. The cost would be astronomical

Invest wisely in your tenants. I can see what you're saying, but the counter balance you are proposing is just beyond any moral reason whatsoever.

I rented from a lady who was totally insane. She cursed me out the first week because i parked near the business she had next to the apartments. She never even mentioned that I couldn't park there.

She would bang on the back window and look inside if she wanted to tell you something

Just a complete cunt.

I moved out 6 months later

Don't be an asshole landlord and you tenants will most likely respect you and your property. I've never fucked over a landlord but had a few shitty ones.

One was an ex cop who felt entitled to just knock on the door whenever and want to do a full inspection. I always refused and said you can come back in 24 hours even though I had nothing to hide. After 2 times he always gave notice even though he bitched that is was his house. I just laughed

Good luck getting any money from someone out of state. And if they dont have a bank account or a job there is literally nothing you can do legally.

precisely why i'd get a 3000 dollar security deposit before renting to anyone. I'd also charge about 1800 a month rent. Lakes houses can go for even more here a month . 3000+

Wrong

I think that if you want to put security cams in common areas you can but you have to inform the tenants.  Absolutely nothing in bathrooms and bedrooms
