Bee sting...

More specifically, wasp stings. Little fuckers stung me 4 times yesterday.

I was getting a tarp out of this outdoor storage box. Never had bees in it before.:shrug:
I got stung immediately on the wrist when I opened the lid. Wasps start swarming, I took off running into the neighbors yard.
3 more stings above my elbow. I was all like... :supercrankey:


I haven't been stung since I was a kid and never really had much of a reaction besides the pain.

Well, about 10 minutes later, I start feeling a bit nauseous and getting chills and feeling kinda tired and weak.
Not too bad but I pretty much felt like this the rest of the day.




This morning I've got these nice painful, itchy welts on my arm, bugging the shit out of me.I still feel a little off.

Fuckin' bees...  :flamethrow: :rockets:  . . . :peace:

So one time I was in the forest on a retreat with young peoples' AA and we were doing what is called a trust walk where everyone is blindfolded except the guy in the front who shouts directions to the people behind him about what to do. Well apparently he wasn't paying the best of attention and when he stepped on an old log it crumbled and there was a yellow jack nest on the other side of, sort of underneath. Fuckers came at all us with the fury. The lead guy who stepped on em got stung something like 17 times. I only got 2 strings fortunately. Was quite a sight to see, people running through the woods, people running in all directions with the hands tied trying to get their blindfolds off so they dont smash into trees.

Wasp stings blow! I was allergic as a child but it seemed to pass over time. Was stung on the tongue once and could hardly talk for days!  :cryariver:

Might not matter so much this morning, but try not to itch them, it'll spread the venom making them worse.

QFT. Totally different animals. I hate it when people generalize between the two.

Bees = useful pollinating creatures that are generally not aggressive (apart from Africanized bees), can sting only once resulting in their own death.
Wasps = carrion & scrap eaters that tend to be much more aggressive, can sting repeatedly without being harmed.

Get your facts straight OP.

We have a couple wasp nests in the awning above our stoop. Haven't been stung yet. Knock on wood.

When I was about ten I got stung by a wasp/yellow-jacket swarm about 21 times. Good thing I was not allergic. Had one of the red wasps get me lightly on the neck a couple of years ago. I had a fever for like three days from the childhood attack.

See, I'm deathly allergic to bees.  When I get stung the pain never stops and I my body attacks itself until I'm given the antidote...  Or if I die, depending on the circumstances.  Last time I was stung was on my hand, by a bee.  Now I'd been stung by wasps for a while only and never saw the bee sting affect; I had been curious if I had become immune to it.  One little bee hurts me more than a wasp sting would.  I'll have the same symptoms you described, like anyone else.  The wasp isn't what kills me.

The pain I described to the doctor the day after my hand sting (swollen my entire hand and up to my middle forearm) was on a 7 and he said otherwise.  To me it felt like my hand was constantly under pressure and it was so fat and swollen I couldn't compress my fingers inwards...  I didn't have knuckles and I looked like I had a fat hand.  I was prescribed painkillers and some steroids to help me.  "Hurr, have an epi-pen"  Hurr, they cost $$$ and expire.  I need to be stung in the neck at least twice to feel scared.  Once will just put me on edge to get myself to an outpatient center or find an ambulance near a fire station.  Again, circumstances.

You should get your own facts straight, there are all sorts of wasps, many are good pollinators and only some are capable of stinging.  Ever read about how figs are pollinated?

Edit:  Also, I'm not sure there are any necrophagous wasps, maybe some omnivorous ones will eat carrion and some that are parasites on necrophagous insects.

That should have been filmed.  Comedy gold.

I didn't used to be allergic but about twenty years ago two weeks in a row I stepped on an underground nest of yellow jackets.  First time I was pissed.  Second time my foot blew up to the size of a melon and hurt like a screaming devil.  Started carrying the pen around just in case. 

I hate yellow jackets and will kill them wherever I see them.  None of the others bother me.

Depends on your definition of 'wasp'. I'm talking about the species in the vespula genus that any layperson would identify as a wasp. And yes, they tend to be omnivores (I have seen them eat carrion btw). Did I claim otherwise?

I think you mean the family Vespidae, but that is a very narrow definition of wasp.  Take a look at bugguide, wasps are spread out all throughout Hymenoptera.  Even Vespidae can be pollinators and yea, here is an example of omnivorous wasp practicing necrophagy.

So I was at work, and we were doing some work on a large oleander hedge a lady had.  Our boss wanted it thinned out to reinvigorate some growth, so I go behind the hedge with my chainsaw and am selectively removing stems.  There's a lot of blackberry brambles, but I've got on long sleeves and chainsaw chaps, so I don't worry about it too much.  I was at it for about a half hour (it was a big hedge) and moved on to another in the long row of plants.  Start cutting, and after awhile I notice a couple of pricks on my arm.  Didn't think too much of it, just figured I'd hit a blackberry bramble.  I kept cutting.  I just wanted to get done with it.  Then I notice some pricks on my other arm.  Then one on my neck.  I look down at myself and I am fucking COVERED in yellow jackets.  I dropped the saw still running, ran about twenty feet along the back of the hedge, then said fuck it and dove through the hedge to land on the lawn.  Ripped my long sleeve off and threw it on the ground, then struggled to get the chaps off while running away.  It was a few years ago, so I can't remember the exact number of stings, but it was close to 30.  I went and picked up the shirt after about 20 minutes of cursing, pacing, and chain smoking, and there were still four of the little bastards on there, just stinging away at the shirt.

Fuck yellow jackets.

I used to work on a bee farm, I've been stung probably about 60-100 times. I worked there for about three summers so that's not so bad considering.

yeah I dont think it really accomplished the goal of the trust walk very effectively
