I've got a vinyl collection about two years in the making. New records are expensive, as are original press classics. But you can find old records of great artists for dirt dirt cheap I'm talking 1-5 bucks.
     
    I've got plenty of Thelonius Monk for under five bucks, found a copy of Emerson Lake and Palmers big live album for 2.99. I did pay $35 for a Mars Volta vinyl, Octahedron. But the artwork that came with it is swag as fuck, and if I still have it in 20 years I bet it'll be worth quite a bit, but vinyl is a truly horrible investment.

    No better way to find cool artists from back in the day then to peruse through the milk crates at your local record store.

I should probably mention I download copious amounts of music as well

They really are, but at least the selections is massive for the most part. I did find a Grateful Dead live in 72 original press at my local flee shop for $10.00, not the best condition but I've seen them at record stores for like $80, and it plays great. Its the original 72 press, not a later press. Probably one of the most cherished things I own, the side with Jack Straw, You Win Again,  and ChinaCat Sunflower/I Know you Rider; its amazing, brought me to tears when I was tripping L.

It's a rarity, but if I see a CD at a garage sale for $2 or so, I might buy it.  The ease and convenience of electronic music just can't be beat.

I'd love to hook a turntable up to my system just to listen, but I don't think I'd be swayed enough by the sound of vinyl to switch.

I'm telling you man, swap meets / flea markets / yard sales / etc. Anywhere else vinyl is gonna be more expensive usually. If you are looking to do it on the cheap, that's the best.

This big monthly swap meet they have around here, can find boxes and boxes and boxes and boxes and boxes upon boxes of vinyl... usually go for under $5 a record, or sometimes 3 or 4 for 10. can find some killer gems but you gotta dig.

I have that.  Got it at EJ Korvettes for $5.  Christmas 1972.  Bought the Band's Rock of Ages at the same time for the same price.  Somehow that got lost.  Not Europe though.  Still have it and all the skips and pops are mine and mine alone.

Check Craigslist too.
Sometimes you can find someones entire collection for realll cheap.
