Do you still buy CD/Vinyl? / akira_akumas awesome fucking music thread
    #20199646 -

A lot of people nowadays seem to rely on downloading, be it free or bought, a lot of people aren't actually collectors of music anymore. Which is fine with me, I've done plenty of that as well, but for me personally, I love having the music, but also having the music in a tangible form. Being able to hold the album, or to look at your collection and see it all there. Maybe its just because I'm a big music lover so I feel the need. I mostly buy CD's, I've spent a shit load of my money on CD's,  I'd say a good 65-75% has to be Dead shows.

I do enjoy collecting Vinyl, I LOVE Vinyl, I actually prefer it, I just don't have turntables yet, but they make some really nice ones nowadays. Vinyl actually seems to be sneaking back into popularity a bit. Once I get turntables, I'm going to be collecting more Vinyl for sure. Anyway, what's your thoughts?

Also, if you want to, go ahead and list some of your favorites that you own. Or list your whole collection if you have about 12 hours to kill.

Yes, I buy vinyl, started collecting maybe a year and a half ago. Don't buy it too often since it's fairly expensive, but I'm quite happy with the collection I have going so far.

Cool man yeah same. I went crazy for awhile, I became addicted and overdid it. I was going all the time spending way more than I could afford. I learned to chill after awhile, I haven't gone in a long time though. I get the urge often though.

My favorite vinyl is a limited edition screen pressed Head For the Hills record I bought at their album release show.

They made 35 of em.

Sometime you can get the cd for a few dollars less with a free mp3 version of the album on amazon. I just put the cd in a box with my old vhs and cassettes though.

I was listening to  a lot of vinyl until my stereos amp broke, now I just use a cheap mp3 player.

I think it's weird that you buy vinyl but don't have a turntable.

I could probably post my whole collection, wouldn't take me that long it's only ~100 records. I don't have anything that's even remotely rare, but here are some of my favorites (though most of the records I own are albums that are favorites of mine, which is why I buy them):
Sleep - Dopesmoker
The Mars Volta - De-Loused in the Comatorium (the recent repress, not an original press)
Operation Ivy - Energy
Operation Ivy - Hectic EP
Black Sabbath - Masters of Reality
Cave In - Jupiter
Inter Arma - Sky Burial
Wynton Marsalis - Black Codes (From the Underground)
Deafheaven - Sunbather
Pink and Brown - Shame Fantasy II
Morgen - S/T
The Locust - Flight of the Wounded Locust (and various other old Locust 5" and 7")

If I keep going I'm just going to end up listing everything I've got  The Locust and some Dizzy Gillespie compilation are the two first records I bought, years and years ago. I got the Dizzy one when I was a kid and went to a record show with my dad. Got the Locust when I went to a Dillinger Escape Plan/Nora/The Locust show in Jersey with a friend of mine in high school. I bought it because I thought it was cool (it's four puzzle piece 7") and then sort of rediscovered it when I got back into some of that stuff and started collecting vinyl on my own last year. It's a fucking pain in the ass to listen to because it's 1-2 songs per side and songs by the Locust are incredibly short, but it's probably my "favorite" record just for the nostalgia and all that type shit.

Well I haven't bought Vinyl yet, but I've had some handed down to me. I wouldn't have bought Vinyl without a turntable. That's why I said once I get one, then I'm going to get addicted to it, I'm trying to back off.

Cd's on the other hand, Jesus.

I reeeeaaaaallllllly want the new remastered Zeppelin vinyls, but I kinda wanna wait until they're all released because I'm sure they will make some giant box set that I'm going to want too later on after.

Hahaha wow man. I used to see those kind of bands all the time. My area was big on the Hardcore music scene for awhile. Nora and the Locust, wow, haven't heard those names in a long time. Dillinger too, haha they were fucking crazy man. They got a new drummer, Billy Rymer, if I told you I jammed with him you wouldn't believe me, but I did.

Not really a fan of their music though, but it was a cool opportunity I got through a friend of a friend.

No, but I've debated starting a vinyl collection for years, mainly because the album covers and art and all that are so cool, and it's cool just to have a collection of genuine vinyl at your disposal just because.

The thing that's kept me from doing it is how completely useless it would be to have a vinyl collection. I have flac lossless copies of everything, so there's absolutely no reason for me to ever listen to vinyl. And it costs money, which is stupid unless I'm buying it directly from the band members at a concert.

Yeah I heard about them re releasing the first 3 albums, I think on both CD and Vinyl. They're going to make so much money on that.

You sound like me with the collecting man.

I would believe you. He was pretty young and unknown when he joined IIRC.

I still jam to Calculating Infinity, not much else of their stuff. Saw them a few times when I was younger before they got anywhere near as big as they are now. Blowing fire in tiny little venues, climbing the rafters, going batshit to maybe a hundred people and shit. Damn they put on an amazing show then. I doubt they could match it now, if not just for the size of venues alone.

I have over 300GB of downloaded music, but I still collect vinyl. It sounds better than mp3s. Not flac...but way better than mp3/m4a.

Plus the art alone is worth it. And your hipster cred goes up 50 points when your friend comes in and is like no wai dood you have this?

The absolute best place to find vinyl is swap meets it seems. I've found some gems in good condition and pay like $10 for 3 or 4  records. Fuck paying like $30-40 a pop brand new.

CDs are dead man. Long dead.

The music game changed. I "steal" all my music. I do make sure to use the money I save on a CD to buy T-shirts, concert tickets, and posters so the band still gets paid. I think it forces bands to tour more because they don't make as much money from album sales.
