Safe pesticides for cacti?

Well apparently my cactus soil came complete with a whole host of little pests. Some worm like larvae things as well as flying gnats. So now I have several San Pedro cuttings as well as a bunch of freshly planted Trich hybrid seeds in this bug infested soil.

I don't know if they will actually damage the cactus but I don't want them all over my house either. So my question is what can I use to kill them without hurting my cacti or preventing germination of my other seeds.

I have a ton of Sevin Dust from my garden but I'm not sure if that will affect or damage cacti.

I rarely ever use them on cacti but you could use neem oil applied in late afternoon. Then you could wash it off in the morning. I dont know exactly what you could use. :shrug:

It sounds like the gnats could be fungus gnats and the worm-like pests are just their larvae. Apparently the adult flies do not harm the cactus (just annoy you), but the larvae can feed on the roots.

From my own experience with fruit flies in the summer, even if I think I've killed them all, one is always hiding out, laying eggs, and the cycle repeats again.

I would try going to a local garden supply shop and taking a look at insecticides. You can always dilute them with water to make the mix as strong or as weak as you would like. They might even have organic mixes that don't use harsh chemicals.

If this cactus was already rooted, you could just move it to a new pot full of sterilized soil. If you have other plants in your house, these gnats could spread to their pots creating a bigger problem.

Before using insecticides you could try repotting the cactus into fresh potting soil.

They're probably fungus gnats but you haven't supplied enough information for us to be sure. Giving out insecticide advice wouldn't be responsible of us unless we know exactly what we're treating.

Keeping them too wet most likely. What kind of soil are you using?
