You need to get yourself a digital camera

But anyway........ It could be mealybugs..... according to this cacti book i have:

'Mealybugs: These fuzzy, cottony, gray or white insects lurk on spines, stems, and roots. Carefully spray plants with a solution of nicotine sulfate or malathion to kill mealybugs, or dip cotton swabs in alcohol and then dab the bugs.'.....
Hope this helps......

If it's only on a couple of spines then I would say they are pups starting. got a pic?

Sounds like mealybugs. They are evil, and are one of the most common causes of cactus death. They can suck the life out of a cactus real quick, especially the variety that gets down on the cactus roots. Go get yourself some insecticide such as neem, insecticidal soap, or pyrethrins. Wipe the bugs that you see off with a Q-Tip dipped in alcohol, then spray the plant with your insecticide. Spray some into the soil as well. Repeat every week for a month, and keep your eyes out for any more of the little fuckers.
