Does My Terrarium Need to be Air Tight?
    #2017524 - 10/17/03 11:18 AM (13 years, 1 month ago)

I have read the FAQ's but am still uncertain about whether my terrarium is good or not. I am using a large tupperware style container with a clear lid. I have perlite on the bottom of the container and a cup with a fish tank bubbler/water heater/aquarium rocks and water. The top of this cup is covered by a wire mesh to minimize water droplets.

My aquarium is not air tight, although the lid seals somewhat good (there are a couple of cracks around the lid though. Is this ok since I have a bubbler pushing o2 into the air? I feel my humidity level is fine, but I'm worried about contams.

I'm sorry if this is a stupid question, but I want to be POSITIVE that I'm doing it right because I don't want to f*@% up my whole project.

If my question is ambiguous I can send pics.

Thanks for your help.

-J

Ambiguous...send pics.

Also, I don't think small cracks are bad. If your pushing air, you should be fine. Could reduce frequent fanning. But before you take my word for it, get a few more replies.

Peace

Still ambiguous, send pics

Here is a basic drawing of my setup. Again, that's perlite on the bottom. I will but the cakes on a wire rack so they don't sit on the perlite. My concern is that this box does not seal. The fastener snaps down and holds the lid in place, but it is not air tight. Plus, where the fastener is (2) and where the cord and air hose come out (1) are areas where air could come in. Is this ok? Will my small air hose provide enough circulation to push air out of this 20 gallon box instead of drawing possibly contaminated air in? This box and one just like it sit inside a wooden trunk which remains closed except when I go to fan. I have tried to make the environment as sterile as possible but just want to double check. Also, if this setup looks wack to anyone, please let me know. I am new to this process and am just trying to get started right. Thanks again. -J

How do you maintain that humidity level?

-Kevin-

How do you maintain that humidity level if you don't use perlite?

Thanks. So you're saying if the walls are wet its too humid? What if they are just slightly wet to foggy?

I have a Tri-View Digital Thermometer but it only measures humidity up to 90%. I just figured if it said 90% and the walls weren't dripping so bad that water would drip on the shrooms that I'd be cool. Perhaps I should by a new hygrometer?

Definitely not a problem that it isn't airtight.

If it was airtight, the bubbler would make it explode

If you have any gaping holes though, duct tape would be a better solution than tin foil/plastic wrap.  Most likely unnecessary.  My foaf's PMP has a couple semi-gaping holes that he considered sealing with duct tape, but decided to wait, and it still pumps out shrooms like a suh-muh-muh-bitch.
