I think its funny to shout "Bassist!" in an accusing voice during a silent part of a performance, it wtf's people. :lol:

My best friend is a bassist (not a racist) but hes not lazy, hes a singer songwriter who makes some damn good stuff and plays like a dozen different kinds of instruments.

I'm trying to get him to join the Shroomery, but hes more into local forums.

Satriani's great. He isn't associated with my particular taste of music, but he's still an EXCELLENT musician. Huge amount of respect for him. I mean that subjectively. I'm not big into prog rock type stuff, I'm big into funk/jazz fusion more so. I LOVE straight jazz music even, talk about musicianship, Jesus Christ.

Watch this video, this is music that is beyond comprehension, especially when the solo progressions start. They play in straight 4/4 swing time, but they play in rhythms that would throw almost anybody off, yet they don't lose time for a second. Bass player, Tom Kennedy is in it too, he has a sick bass solo, sit through the whole video if you can. :thumbup:

And Dave Weckl is among my top 5 drummers, easily, love him.

Oh man, totally agreed. Weckl is a straight badass.

Jazz is a HEAVY influence for a lot of prog rock and technical metal believe it or not.

The basic skills translate from guitar to bass and vice versa, but bass is different than guitar.

I play both, but I enjoy bass much more. As everyone already said, bass is what holds the groove of the song together. And it's very easy to tell when someone has only guitar experience and tries to play bass. I find it sounds different when a guitarist tries to play bass, unless they know the right way to do it. There's a certain way your fingers pluck the strings that makes it sound so smoooth.

Bass definitely has it's own skill set to be mastered.

I love Mahavishnu. I'm 23, but my Father was a musician, a drummer in his day. He introduced me to the likes of Weather Report (Jaco Pastorius :heart:) Mahavishnu Orchestra and tons of others when I was around 12. He took me to see Dave Weckl's band at the age of 13 or so and forget about it, my mind was too fragile to handle musicianship of that caliber. I was in awe for days, still kind of feelin' it. :lol: I love this stuff, it's the music I put the most time into studying.

Great answer. It's the same all around. I'd never act as though I can play guitar better because I play bass. It's apples and oranges.
