The bass generally plays a completely different role in music to the guitar.

For me yes. I couldnt stand chords fingerings so I though bass would have been easier.

Turned out I hadn't enough passion/will for playing bass too, I should be a singer I suppose, because of small theory behind it or ease of practice.

Lemmy became a bassist from being a guitarist because they couldnt find someone good enough if I dont remember wrong.

exactly! everybody plays guitar and wants to be in the front shredding or what not. But honestly say when you hear a killer bassist like Claypool or Geddy lee and how their off the wall bass riffs become the backbone of the groove you realize bass doesn't just mean standing in an ill lit corner of the jam playing the root notes of the chord progression yawning.

bass is the most underrated instrument ever. Always cracks me up to see guitarist try to half ass playing bass in a band. They have no concept of groove and playing in the pocket. You can always tell when someone is a bassist, or a guitarist faking it.

It's funny, most real musicians I know all LOVE bass. My band mates always stress their love for it. I'm the bass player, my guitar player also does a lot of the recording/production and all that. Even though he's the guitar player, he STRESSES about bass the most. Forget just a proper bass line/groove, but the production end. The bass sound and how it's recorded can make or break a fucking recording so fast. People just don't realize that stuff as listeners. What really goes on behind the scenes of recording is a whole different ball game.

Playing the root notes to a chord progression isn't anything to laugh at either. People just think, "Oh you play the notes", no, not at all.

How are you grooving on those notes? Are you locked in with the bass drum? Are you aware of which notes are staccato, or which ones you let resonate? Do you articulate the notes softly or loudly? Do you have the touch that a "real" professional bass player has?

For me, I chalk people who claim bass is easier up to pure ignorance of musicianship. They clearly understand nothing about being a musician and being proficient at whatever it is you play.

God damn, I've never jammed with a band that would debate "Nah man, my instrument is harder than yours".

No, each member is proficient at the instrument they play. My guitar player is blown away by the shit I do on bass, and same with me for him. Music is music, why is it always a competition, especially if you're in the same band trying to make sick music?

I will say though, that nothing is more ignorant than a person saying,

"WOW THAT GUY IS GOOD! HE PLAYS SO FAST!"

God, that is so fucking annoying. Why speed is associated with being a good musician is beyond me. You ever try playing something at an INCREDIBLY slow tempo? You'll realize your sense of time is pure shit.

Secondly, speed is a great way to ramble notes that have absolutely no melodic or rhythmic value. The shorter you are on the note, the less it matters. Incredibly fast playing doesn't impress me, it did when I was 14, not now. What impresses me now is a musician who can play with emotion, clarity, rhythm, melody, precise timing and pure feel. Phrasing is the real deal. Who needs to phrase when you're playing 32nd notes at 300 bpm? It's retarded. You slow those "shred" patterns down and they're mostly nonsensical, non emotive nonsense.

Just my two cents. Playing fast is fine, if you can use it in a rhythmic and melodic way, otherwise all it means is you sat down for 8 hours practicing playing any meaningless patterns free of melody and groove as fast as you can.

Yngwie Malmsteen, to each their own, but nothing about this guy is interesting as a musician.

I mostly agree about Malmsteen... he's like a Bach Robot.

Steve Vai Or Joe Satriani on the other hand...

However you can definitely play 300BPM with melody, emotion, phrasing and all that. It's just not as common. Check out the videos I posted earlier.
You may not even like Tech Death metal, but you can't deny those guys are amazing musicians.

Oh I totally agree. I said in the post that playing fast is fine, if it DOES include these things. :thumbup:

There are plenty of musicians who can play at very fast speeds but you can still hear the melody, the phrasing, the rhythmic quality, and those are the guys that are great. Even them though, they know that constant shredding isn't what it's all about. They know when to make it slow, and tasty. :lol:

Where as Malmsteen, it's ALL he does. Shred constantly.

One of my favorites as far as guitar is Scott Henderson. He is so fucking tasty, even when he's "shredding", but it isn't about that. It isn't the "difficulty" of what he's playing, as much as "what he chooses to play" being just so damn good. It's the musician's feel.

This is a song from a combination of sick musicians who got together and recorded an album. Scott Henderson on guitar, Victor Wooten on bass, and Steve Smith on drums.

Honestly, as a song, I don't care that much for it, there are way better jams on this album, but Henderson's guitar solo in it has earned it's way into being one of my favorite guitar solo's of all time.

The way the music drops into it, and he just comes in with that bend with the wah wah, just the taste and feel of that, it's unreal. Just skip to 1:14 if you want to hear it.
