Identify Gymnopilus Spectabilis
    #2010885 - 10/15/03 08:39 AM (13 years, 1 month ago)

I was out weilii hunting the other day and came across a large cluster of shrooms growing out of a dead tree stump. I dont have a camera to show you what they look like but they look like laughing Gyms to me. The caps are yellow fading to a darker color near the middle of the cap. The spore print was white i tasted a little peice yesterday and it was really bitter tasting. They bruised a rusty brownish to reddish in some of em. Anybody find these before.  :mushroom2:if you have please post pics and info on them.

Gymnopilus prints should be some variation of orange, not white.

The white print, accompanied by the fact that I also live and pick in GA, and knowing just how abundant the armillariella are right now in the suburbs of ATL, a wild but educated guess would be some type of honey mushrooms, probably the ringed honey mushroom.

Can't say for sure without a pic, but I highyl doubt you have Gym. spectabilis. Check out some pics of Armillariella mellea.

I saw your post about the armillariella but they look nothing like that. I will try and get some pics up if possible

You are talking about the actual mushroom (the fruit), I don't think there should be any variation to the spore color. I think you've got something other than gymnopilus, but I'm no expert.

The cap diameter ranges from 4 to 20cm initially convex with an in rolled margin, the cap has an overall golden color to it which darkens to orange brown as the fruit body ages. The color of the cap flesh is cream to straw-yellow and it is firm and quit thick. The crowded gills are adnate with broad attachment to the stipe. They are staw yellow to buff at first changing to a bright rusty color as the spores mature. Sorry should have included all of this before. Im pretty spaced out ate weiliis yesterday.

Your description so far is a reasonable description of any of several species of Armillaria (Honey Mushrooms). If they lack a ring (even when very young), then they are Armillaria tabescens. Otherwise, they are a bit more complicated to key out. They can be fairly variable in appearance, so they may very well not match a photo or set of photos you saw.

Did you actually make a spore print on white paper? For identification purposes you need to do that to actually know the spore print color. Finding a dusting of spores on a lower mushroom cap can tell ou that the spores are light or dark colored, but the color can be very deceiving.

Happy mushrooming!

yes they all had rings even the young ones. Above the ring the rest of the stem is a very light pink color but below the ring its very yellow staining reddish brown.

That sounds like one of the species of Armillaria.

Here's a link to some information on the genus.

Happy mushrooming!
