cbo -

rommstein just posted your earlier pics of these shrooms to:

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat...;o=&fpart=1

ToxicGuy says they're probably Galerina (a very dangerously poisonous mushroom).

So far everyone agrees that it's not Psilocybe cyanescens. I think it's not Ps. cyanescens because of the splintery non-hollow stem, the pale, slimy cap with no hint of reddish brown, and the way the stem widens where it attaches to the cap.

When you take a spore print, let us know what color you get for the spores. If the print is brown it's definitely not a Psilocybe, and probably a Galerina.

I'm in BC too (Victoria) and I've seen tons of those things walking around town. I don't think they're hallucinogenic at all, and I'm hesistant to try.

Galerina is a good possibility, so is Psilocybe.

The fact that they don't bruise blue pretty much eliminates the active species.

Most Psilocybe species are not active.

Happy mushrooming!

You know, mj, your edited comment suggests that you said something about that guess, then decided to not say it.

If I made a stupid guess, it's certainly OK to say you disagree. If you see something obvious that I missed, please point it out to me. I'm here to learn from, as well as help, others. Disagreement can be civil, and your opinion on mushrooms of similar appearance to these is valued.

It wouldn't be first time I made a guess that, in retrospect, I wonder why I guessed that.

I am *not* right all the time. I try to err on the side of caution.

Here's a hint for everybody.

The mushrooms is this thread fall solidly into the category of LBMs. If you don't know how difficult LBMs are to ID correctly, David Arora gives an amusing account in Mushrooms Demystified.

With several fresh specimens and a microscope you should be able to get to the correct genus. Getting to species is likely to be impossible, even with the monographs, as a high percentage of the mushrooms that have not yet been named are LBMs.

In other words, not all mushrooms can be given names. Most kinds of mushrooms in the world have not yet been named. Most of the large and distinctive ones have probably been named, but not the LBMs.

Happy mushrooming!
