2012 Michigan Spring hunting (morels and oysters updated 5/19)
    #16163006 -

well i get so excited sometimes to get home and fill my belly, i forget to take pictures... but i'm trying to be more conscious and once i'm supporter account again i can do some serious uploading from my hunts but here's a taste of whats to come in this thread

I'm also moving north outta the city over the next few weeks so the morels will only continue to come

New pics (added 5/1/12)

5/3/2012: the last few pics i was trying to sort by noticable macroscopic differences such as contrast in color between pits and ridges how the connect to the stalk and color, as well as by which patch they came from... I still need to attempt to identify them, but i also gotta go get in the woods....

edit 5/19:

oysters:

AN ODD YELLOW HALFFREE...

You can always do your serious uploading on mushroomobserver.org and include the images to your posts here.  Not only does that give you free unlimited storage space and a second opinion on the ID, but also your pics show up full size instead of being small until clicked on.

Nice Panus btw.  I think 2 is a Discina.  You could try to ID your morels with the Kuo morel paper.  Kuo lives in the next state over from you so the MI morels are probably well represented.

thanks for the kind words everyone...

It seems about the beginning of the yellows really popping out and the weather has been a mycophile's dream lately and only appears to be getting better where i live. i've spent the past week an hour south of town working on a friend's house and the woods are a lot more advanced in season but still plenty of morels to be had and doesn't seem to be stopping soon if the weather keeps up. Due to working for my friend I actually haven't had as much time as usual the past week to get out but the weather coming up looks fantastic. I took an hour break to smoke some reefer with my friends and explore the his new property and  found some today (will be edited into original post). I'm also moving north outta town when i get back to town from helping out my friend, so Thats only more woods and more season for me this year and i'm super stoked to have more areas to explore. being from the city without a car has always been a damper in my hunt, but most my orginal post was found IN THE CITY, scatter in various hillsides and ridges that aren't easy to find and porbably trespassing but what ya gonna do. i can't wait to share my finds with you all.. (and get a new camera)

I love this knife! It's actually really new, i just acquired it at the gun and knife show, but it is by far the most premium pocket knife i've ever owned. it's 100% Made in the USA 4" Tanto blade, assisted opening with safety option by Benchmade. Even came with lifetime warranty for wear and tear.

I always look forward  to your input when i post in the Hunting forum. Thanks for the posting pics on mushroom observer idea, i've been there but never uploaded anything.

I actually have been trying to document my finds more thoroughly, after reading Kuo's Morels last year. I was actually going to try to contact him about the MDCP (Morel Data Collection Project), and hopefully start contributing samples. However that should probably be done seeing as they're everywhere right now. thanks for the link to his paper thoughly..

It's varied a bit... usually one of the first thing i notice is mayapples when looking for woods. usually on south or east facing slopes although I find them on every and know people who have more success on the other side of hills. Usually either in maple leaf litter near poplars or in oak leaf litter near ash trees and dying elms. I haven't really been taking my journal out withg me lately, but I will be more thoroughly documenting my finds over the next few weeks.

I did... last night. I know he's probably extraordinairly busy this time of year, probably should've contacted him ahead of season. I'll be sure to post anything i potentially help the MDCP with here.

i got a response the other day regarding this, and obviously morel season is pretty well over anyway... but Dr. Kuo offered me the ability to help collect samples for the stinkhorn project he is working on now, I haven't found a ton of these in my times mushroom hunting, but i know a few spots that are consistent over past years and have started learning more about them since his reply.

i am pretty sure i got a lot of my morels properly id'd properly this year with the Kuo morel paper, however i never got around to doing a post with ID's and will have to see if that type of free time arises, but that yellow half free is a mystery to me, i wish it hadnt been so tasty and so early in the season, it really should've gone into my collection instead...

The oyster were delicious, we found over 8 lbs of them (after cutting/cleaning for bugs) probably actually found close to 15 lbs though total. they are in seemingly prime season in mid michigan.

are you sure? look at the one's behind.. they are what i would of classified punctipes.

I know morchella punctipes is often paler yellow when young, but it also usually has sharp ridges when younger rounding with age. where as this was more of a rounded ridge. also the caps on all the other half free's i've ever found always are more of a pointy cap, where as the tip of this was more rounded, and the undersides of the cap where it overhangs looked slightly different although i failed to capture a photo of it.. also unlike the weaker sizable stems i'm used to on half free's this was very sturdy and more proportionate to the cap size. unfortunately instead of photographing spores, saving the specimen for furthur evaluation, etc. i fell prey to the same fate many morel hunters do, i ate it and it was good!

however, while recent research only suggests 3 half frees (west coast, eastern US and european species) i suspect they are more complexly divided similar to what we've found with the rest of morchella.
