Morels and Pan subbs (PICS!)
    #4031569 - 04/08/05 06:12 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

Went hunting again today and found about 8 morels and 3 Pan subbs. Also found Psathyrella velutina, which means the weilii should be up fairly soon.

First the Morels:

I seem to have a knack for finding dead animals. I found a dead snake, dead fish, dead turtle, and a dead something else. Here's a pic of the dead something else:

Psathyrella velutina:

The Panaeolus subbalteatus:

The weird thing about these subbs is that they actually blued fairly well. This is very rare for this species... Pics:

The final haul:

Nice gumby, as always.
The blueing in those p. subbs
is considerable. My first finds
of the season last year showed alot of blueing
as well.. I can almost taste em... the pictures are so
clear. All new hunters don't be confused by the pine
needles. Panaeolus subbalteatus grow from piles of horse
dung/stable shavings or subbstansially, "pun is intended", composted bails of hay. Nofindum... "Yet"....!!!!1

wow!! What an awesome cluster of pan subs.. And they even blue!! :mushroom2: Great eye, those things blend in very well with the forest floor.

Just a quick question on habitat, that area looks like a wooded area with some oak and pine trees...no? What are the odds of finding pan subs just in the woods in a park or whatever, or is this a rare occasion?

The pic is misleading. The Pan subbs were found in a grass clipping compost pile back in the woods, hence the look of the environment. The really only fruit from grass clippings, horse dung, straw, and manure fertilized lawns.

thanks for clearing it up.. I can kind of see the grass pile now.. I've got a huge grass mulch pile in my backyard from all the yards I cut.. Tons and tons of random spores from all over N-GA lawns.. will be interesting to see what comes up from it this year.. Last year I got few cool looking ones but no subs or anything active. I actually think lots of weilii would come up in it if there was some soil mixed in... HMM.. now I am getting ideas :crazy2:.

Gumby, are Pan subbs active? is that the indication that i should get from the blueing? i have heard mj say that they arent but i have read otherwise. I once ate about 50 of those lil guys and had a mild lil trip, but it was much different that eating a few grams of an active mushroom. i'm not sure how to explain it. the weilii just cant get here fast enough.

Yes they're active. If you ate 50 and didn't have a level 3+ trip, you didn't find Pan subbs. mj would never say Pan subbs are inactive. Panaeolina foensecii are inactive, and they look very similar.

Great finds Gumby. How come the stems are red on a couple of the morels? Just curious.

because they are Morchella rufobrunnea and not M. esculenta.

From what I've seen, once morels start to get past their prime or close to it, the stems go red.

Gumby, I really think you should dry some of those red-bruising mushrooms and send them into Dr. Carter's club of morel researchers.
http://www.mushroomexpert.com/morels/mdcp_legend.html#01
It says that they have no woodland samples of any red-bruising morels! And the limited range they know of is only Mexico and California.

I have also found red-bruising morels in Wisconsin.
