Gospel of Thomas
    #2001045 - 10/11/03 09:24 PM (13 years, 1 month ago)

what do you suppose this means:

13. Jesus said to his disciples, "Compare me to something and tell me what I am like."

Simon Peter said to him, "You are like a just messenger."

Matthew said to him, "You are like a wise philosopher."

Thomas said to him, "Teacher, my mouth is utterly unable to say what you are like."

Jesus said, "I am not your teacher. Because you have drunk, you have become intoxicated from the bubbling spring that I have tended."

And he took him, and withdrew, and spoke three sayings to him. When Thomas came back to his friends they asked him, "What did Jesus say to you?"

Thomas said to them, "If I tell you one of the sayings he spoke to me, you will pick up rocks and stone me, and fire will come from the rocks and devour you."

Jesus gave one message for the common man, and one for his followers. He stated that explicitely. There's the outer and inner gospel.

Most people settle for the outer.
Sad but true.

I don't know. I'll give it a shot..

Thomas said to him, "Teacher, my mouth is utterly unable to say what you are like."
-Thomas thinks Jesus is an unbelievably holy being? Very reverant.

Jesus said, "I am not your teacher. Because you have drunk, you have become intoxicated from the bubbling spring that I have tended."
-Thomas learnt something from said 'bubbling spring of intoxication' which Jesus 'tended'. Stupid parable. Could mean a shite load of things. I'm inclined to say Jesus grew some mushrooms and gave them to Thomas. Or it could mean Jesus had taught Thomas all he could, so Thomas no longer had a teacher.

And he took him, and withdrew, and spoke three sayings to him. When Thomas came back to his friends they asked him, "What did Jesus say to you?" Thomas said to them, "If I tell you one of the sayings he spoke to me, you will pick up rocks and stone me, and fire will come from the rocks and devour you."
-Jesus could have told Thomas something so hard for the others to believe that they wouldn't have been able to bear it and killed him on the spot. Fire coming from rocks though, no clue.

at this point i think we can be relatively certain seperation exists as a fallacy of finite perception, and the only barrier to infinite creativity is a preimposed notion of certainty and artificial conditioning. nothing is without origin

Thomas said to him, "Teacher, my mouth is utterly unable to say what you are like."

Jesus is the alpha and the omega. He is a walking paradox. He is not definable in finite terms. In many ways, He is like the great tao.

Jesus said, "I am not your teacher. Because you have drunk, you have become intoxicated from the bubbling spring that I have tended."

Jesus humbles himself to the Father in this verse, reminding his followers that they are just as much connected to God as himself, they just didn't realize it. The enlightenment that Jesus showed them has caused his followers to put him on a pedastal, and he refuses it. He reserves the glory for God.

And he took him, and withdrew, and spoke three sayings to him. When Thomas came back to his friends they asked him, "What did Jesus say to you?" Thomas said to them, "If I tell you one of the sayings he spoke to me, you will pick up rocks and stone me, and fire will come from the rocks and devour you."

who knows what Jesus told Thomas? But considering the over all theme of Thomas's gospel, I would bet it had something to do with individual autonomy, free will, the true nature of infinity and relativity. Many of these ideas would be considered quite radical and very disrespectful, even heretical in the eyes of Christ's followers themselves. Most people can't handle the whole truth all at once.

DoctorJ I believe the gospel of saint Thomas was denounced as herecy when it was translated earlier this century.

The bible has a lot of very good lessons, i dont understand how it can easily be religiously followed though. As it is considered a mixture of real stories and metaphors, although it isnt apparant which is which except where common sense easily puts a story into one category or another.

Actually, I told Thomas the story of how there will be an establishment known as Kentucky Fried Chicken that will serve good, home-cooked meals for cheap... it really blew his mind, and since we were both baked, it REALLY blew his mind.. I mean, try to explain the concept of fried chicken back then, it really doesn't work like that... ?sighs?
Peace.

the three "lost hearings" of thomas the twin:
1) if you meet the massiach on the road to damascus, crucify that fellow
2) the way which can be trodden by a follower is not the true way
3) no one's mouth, not even the mouth of the son of man, is large enough to utter the whole of the truth

I think Jesus had alot of secrets. If there is a god it would sure be cool as hell if he could tell us the true nature of existance. Or maybe they themselves don't know.......

First, Jesus told Thomas people get dumb when they drink a little and second, sometimes it's better to keep ones mouth shut.
Last saying was for Thomas to invent an excuse to avoid any "alcoholic" discussion.
