About 4 years ago I met a dude and we became pretty good friends pretty quickly. He was managing a few bars near where I lived at the time and we hit it off really well. He was boarding in a house with a friend of his and their lease came up so he had to move out and needed to find a new rental really soon.

He came to me and asked me for $2700 in bond money, to borrow, saying that he'd be able to pay me back pretty quick because his jobs were paying pretty well. I trusted him, as we'd hit it off pretty well and he seemed like an  honest dude.

So I lent him the money, he got the place, and it was a fucking pimping pad. a 3 bedroom pimping 3 storey apartment with a rooftop deck in Prahran. Alarm bells  should have rang by this stage as the rent would have been nuts but I thought he had it covered.

Over the course of a couple of weeks he got sacked from his job, and he disappeared. Talked to a few mutual friends and it turned out he'd owed a it of cash to a few people. Sadly, a couple of them were one night stands he'd picked up and after sex had begged them to loan him cash, usually $500 or there abouts to pay his rent because his "work hadn't paid him yet", also a couple of his bosses had given him cash advances on his wages. I'm guessing to cover the ridiculous rent of the place he'd gotten but who knows what else.

Anyway, his mum's place got hit with a cyclone a couple of states north and he just up and disappeared. I tried hard for about 6 months to get in touch with him to get my money back but he just disappeared off the face of the earth. This was in 2010.

Anyway, about 3 weeks ago I got this random email from someone asking if I knew who this guy by name. I said yes and he owes me $2700. The guy said "I bumped into an old friend who said he worked with a guy in Queensland (2 states north of us at the time, so a fair way away") who was bragging about people he'd ripped off and our names were both mentioned. I found you on the internet because it was mentioned you like taking photos so you were easy to find. here is his phone number and whereabouts, including his employers details if you want to find him"

I was like wow what the fuck.

I messaged the number he gave me and sure enough it was the right guy.

I just threw out some vague threats of "not wanting to make it nasty" and he immediately responds with "i'll call the cops" which I said for what because I have other people who will testify that you owe me money, I threatened no physical harm and asking for debt repaid does not consitutute harrassment. After a bit of back and forth he finally says "fine lets settle it"

fucking four years man. I thought that money was gone. I knew to play it cool and not say Im coming to cut your legs off etc

I also found his mum on fb, had her on hand and if he just flat out refused was going to contact both of them and send them a nice long email with a list of all his dirty deeds, the people & employers he'd ripped off and contact details of all of them (he worships his mum and am sure he would have crumbled had she found out what he was really like)

the weird part of the whole thing is just the random anonymous email I get from someone with the info I needed. Small fucking world.

Nice one, haha people are fucked up I hate owing a friend $10 no idea how you could rip someone off like that when all your using it for is to pay for a fancy place to live.

I earn reasonable cash. As I said to him, if it were a couple of hundred I would have just let it slide as I know he was in a bad place at the time, but $2700 is hard to just forget about

I've got so much ammo on this guy I could tear him down, I have email addresses for the HR dept of the company he works for with al ist of all his previous emplyers and phone numbers hes ripped off plus a list of all the people and girls hes fucked over/fucked to send to his mum to make everyone he knows hate him, plus everyone he knws where he is now with a msg to send them to warn them of him

But probably so do other people; who's to say he isn't being tar-and-feathered all the time as a result of his borrowing habits? There's people that basically live this way; they just cheat their way through life and the move on once they've worn out a specific social circle, at which point they'll pack their bags and set up shop in the next town.

Obviously, this doesn't mean you shouldn't try to get your cash back, but I wouldn't hold out too much hope.

I mean that some people just don't give a fuck about other people exposing their fraudulent pasts. They live by a scorched earth approach: milk the social circle as long as it keeps working and move on once it's being fucked up because they get found out/exposed. Like I said, for some people, it's a way of life. If that's the case, this guy may just make excuses to pay you next week, no, tomorrow, hey sure buddy I'm going to pay up, I promise! And before you know it, he has managed to stretch the weeks into months and all of a sudden he disappears again and settles down in the next spot. It may take another four years before you find him, but hey, that's four years down the road - and who's to say you haven't given up by then? See how this could work?
