Let's talk about MycoBags!
    #1993312 - 10/09/03 12:47 PM (20 years, 5 months ago)

Hey there folks. So, about twenty three days ago I inoc'ed two MycoBags pre-filled with substrate. they've been kept aat 70-80 degrees, well, the mycelium is nowhere to be found! condensation has occured inside the back just above the substrate, and it seems that some gas has been released in there causing some room to form overtop of the substrate... but... no mycelium. Any suggestions?

23 days is a long time to see nothing, what and how did you
inoculate it with, and are you able to keep the temp nearer
80 ?f and stable?

I've found mycobags take a long time to get started. 3-4 weeks is not uncommon.

Have you broken the bags apart? Losen the substrate, mix it around until it feels like potting soil.

The gas is a great sign. Once there is good myc growth, the bag will fully inflate. Make sure the filter patch isn't folded over so air exchange can take place.

It sounds like you are getting close to seing signs of growth.

If you see gas and no contams, you're probably doing fine.

Once you see white, you will see more growth every few hours.

Too bad they don't say mycobags take so long. Think of it this way, PF Tek used 1/2 pint cakes and it sometimes takes 2-3 weeks to see growth. A micobag is at least twice as big as a pf cake.

It's cool, then, to break the bags apart now, this long after inoculation? I was thinking about doing that, but wasn't too sure it was the right move.

Best to mix at 15% and above colonisation imo.
Can you see no signs of filaments runing through the substrate?
Like realy fine cotton wool ?
Even for a mycobag thats a while ime, temprature is key to fast
colonisation. Stteady and 80?f/84?f

Absolutely. You may discover growth in the middle of a few bags.

You should mash the bags right after innoc but since you haven't...

Sometimes mycobags are duds and you have to re inoculate but you should see some growth in at least one of the bags by now.

Mycelia grows faster in loose substrate. Who knows, you may still spread some spores around as well.

If you haven't smashed the bags, you should.

Give me a minute I'll find mycobag's link for smashing their bags. You'll be amazed at how flat mr. mycobag smashes his bags.

Paid gives good advice, but you need to break those cakes at the start too, otherwise you are trying to grow mycelia on a brick.

Well, I just broke em apart. One of the bags had more mycelium then the other, but neither really had a suitable amount imo. Should I consider re-inoculating?

Nope. You have myc. Now that the bags are loosened, you should be able to see the growth speed up. No sense in wasting spores if you have myc.

Congradulations.

Things will speed up now. You are still at least 3 weeks from shrooms but you will be able to watch the mycelia grow. Every day you should see more.

it's just not a terribly large amount of mycelia.... I'll consider the re-inoc if four days don't yeild signifigant growth.

Realize, any chunk of spores you see in your syringe contains thousands if not millions of spores.

Spores are sooooo small you can't see them with the naked eye.

That you can even see mycelia is a great sign. That means they are growing big and strong. Once you can see it, it grows at an astounding rate.

Think, if you re-inject, it may take another 23 days to even grow to anything visible. By then, your bags should be overwhelmed with mycelia from your first injections.

Every time you inject these bags, you risk contamination.

Do a search of this site. See if ANYBODY suggests re-inoculation after colonization begins.

Fresh spores can stunt mycelia. This is part of the reason people suggest harvest before the veil breaks.

Your growth was so slow because your substrate was too compact. You'll be fine now.

Good point, and good advice :]
I didnt think of compaction, as its somthing
i don't come across, as i always use a lot of verm
which keeps things airy.

If you buy the pre filled bags, all the air is squeezed out of them for shipping. They stay fresh longer if they are compacted, but they are too dense for quick growth.

Once crumbled, they become VERY airy.

My cat found better results with injecting the spore water at the edge of the bag instead of directly in the middle.
