Most of the squirrels around the Toronto area are black. Apparently they are Eastern Grey squirrels but the grey colored ones aren't nearly as common.

Yeah I thought squirrels were mostly black. With lighter coloured ones in warmer climate?

Something I was reading just now was suggesting that the black fur helps them stay warmer in the winter.

most of the ones here in texas are brown. And they are EVERYWHERE

here on campus they will literally climb ON YOU to get your food. like, up your leg/torso. these are the ballsiest, fattest squirrels I've ever seen

One thing I've seen, while the animals werent rare, but the circumstances were.

It was a very small island in algoquin that was covered everywhere in tiny frogs. You couldnt walk without stepping on them. The island formed some sort of micro-environment I think, and their predators probably werent on this small of a island.

The fucking things would lemming into our fire pit. Some would jump back out all burnt.

On a side note, I had to stop dead in the middle of the road yesterday to wait for some geese to cross. The bitch behind me started to honk, and tried to go around me but then she had to stop as well. I gave her the finger.

That reminded me though of the rarest animal I've seen, outside of a zoo, in person.

Last summer I saw a skunk up close!  It waddled right past my forklift.  It was fucking HUGE!

Skunks are not that rare here I found an orphaned kit once (I assume the mother was hit by a car) but it was the size of a small kitten. kept it till it could fend for its self then turned him loose.

The Golden Cheeked Warbler.  Studied it in one of my ecology courses and took a field trip to a TX county where they have a strong conservation effort underway.  They live and nest exclusively in only a few counties in central TX on the ash juniper tree so their habitat is practically nothing.  Pretty damn rare bird.  I'm not sure where it stands now but the population 7-8 years ago was miniscule, as in less than 500 alive in the world.  My professor was astonished we saw one she was practically crying with joy :lol:
