I live in the Dominican Republic now, but I am in Canada twice every year for about four weeks each time to visit my parents. They live in Ottawa. As well, a significant percentage of the tourists here are Canadian, as is a very large percentage of the expatriate community -- usually surfers and windsurfers who stay from six months to a few years, or who spend the winter here and the summers in Canada. I spend a lot of time talking to them.

When I am in Canada I carefully read at least one newspaper (often two) pretty much cover to cover (except the sports section) every single day. I watch television as well. I do a heck of a lot of shopping in all kinds of stores (resupplying stuff that is hard to find here). I talk to my parents and old friends and ex-co-workers.

The only changes I have noticed is that the socialized medicine is even worse than it was when I left, there are even more government regulations, taxes are even higher, and the dollar is worth less. Oh, and since the Grand Banks cod have more or less gone the way of the Dodo, unemployment in the Maritime Provinces is even higher than it was sixteen years ago (hard as that is to believe).

About the only positive changes I can see is that the Quebec separation dealie appears to be on the back burner (for now), and it looks as if eventually weed may be decriminalized. Otherwise, there is less to recommend Canada than there was sixteen years ago.

Hey, if you are happy living there, more power to you. I had few complaints when I was your age either. The only reason I threw in my two cents was Kid Orgo's beef against the "authoritarian state" and the "the 19-foot boa constrictor that is gov't control". If he thinks 19-foot boa constrictors are a pain in the ass, I doubt he'll appreciate 29-foot ones.

As for Canada and Libertarian principles....

Well we have problems, but I think we're headed in the right direction. At least as a society.

As I see it, the Canadian people are increasingly becoming separated from the Canadian Government. In many cases it looks like we just do whatever we want, and we let them (the gov) do whatever they want.

As such, I would not judge our country by our government. I would judge it by the people.

This argument about how Canada is this and that... when you compare Canada to the US, Canada is the nicest place in the world. I've lived right outside of Washington DC for my whole life. I have been raped by my own government on more than occassion. I'm sick of paying a government I don't support, 1/3 of my income, and not even having health insurance, or dental insurance. I'm sick of being harrased and searched by police because I have long hair, or "look" like a criminal. I'm sick of working my ass off everyday, and not having a fucking thing to show for it. I'm sick of being fed bullshit propoganda by ignorant, uneducated, self-righteous fuckholes. I'm sick of the fact that wherever I go, I am watched by video cameras on every corner.. I'm sick of the ignorant brainwashed zombie consumers that surround me. I'm sick of the bullshit they put on TV. I'm sick of watching the fat cats in washington sitting on golden thrones encrusted with diamonds, eating their roast mutton, debating on how much of a pay increase they should get, while people a block down rot away in some street corner in the cold with no food. I'm fucking sick of this country, and I want out. And I sure as hell am not going to war for my bullshit government and George Bush's power trip with his little cock. For these reasons and so much more, I'm getting the hell out of here.

I'm serious about this.. I want to move to Toronto. This is something I've been thinking about for a long time, and I think that it is time. Though I think with winter coming up I would freeze my ass off.. that should give me a good 6 months to prepare.

Canada... here comes Shroomism!

I think just about anywhere in Canada would be better than my current location, The Universe's Capitol of Fascist Ignorance and Petty Materialism.

I will probably move to either Canada or Europe when I finish my education and get a little $$$ saved up.

To all those poeple who complain about the higher taxes we pay here in Canada:

At least the extra money isn't going to fund a massive military. I think we have a standing army of 60k, maybe a little more or less. Personally I feel good knowing that I'm paying for other people's health and such. They're paying for mine, as well.

I was in the hospital the other night. I had blood tests done, ultrasound, and a couple x-rays. Plus a 12-hour stay. I didn't pay a cent.

Yes our healthcare system needs work...but at least we ADMIT it needs work and we try to do something about it.

I would gladly pay higher taxes knowing that they were going ANYWHERE but military.

in canada you'll pay far more than 1/3 of your gross in income tax - it can be as high as 60% for upper-income brackets if you don't deduct every fucking thing you can. which is why many doctors, lawyers, and dentists move to the states, they get faaar richer.

other than that, canada is pretty great. west coast BC all the way, baby. the damn yankee RAVE Act won't effect us electronic music junkies here either, which is nice.

The problem is, you can only do whatever you want until whatever you want to do runs up against what the government says you can't do. All I point out is that you run up against that wall sooner in Canada than you do in the US.

As such, I would not judge our country by our government. I would judge it by the people.

However, there are countries (such as the one where I live) where the government is so lackadaisacal and/or incompetent that (unlike Canada) it is pretty easy to avoid them. For example, I've paid exactly zero in income taxes in my almost sixteen years of living here. Here, the government does nothing for me, but they ask nothing of me either.

Canada is fortunate in that if things come to a crunch, the protection received from the most powerful military machine on the planet will come at zero cost to Canadian taxpayers.

Yeah you did. You just didn't pay it at a desk in the hospital. You paid far more for those tests than you would have in the US -- and WAAAAAYYYYY more than you would have paid here in the Dominican Republic.

You might want to take a look at some of those studies the government is commissioning every few years to investigate (yet again) the Canadian health care crisis. You'll be shocked to see what your share of the bill comes to.

Yes our healthcare system needs work...but at least we ADMIT it needs work and we try to do something about it.

The only thing that ever gets done about it is --

1) Yet more studies and panels and commissions

2) More money thrown at it (need I tell you where the money comes from?)

Here's an example:

Work 40 hours a week, couldn't afford health insurance
They took 1/3 of my income
I got food poisoning one day and went to the emergency room
They stuck an I.V in me and pumped me with saline (salt water) for 2 hours.
I got the bill - $900

Right now my taxes go to the military and social security which I will never see. I'd gladly pay higher taxes for free healthcare. The cheapest healthcare through my job was $50 a month, and I simply couldn't afford it after taxes and all my bills.

Despite what many people like to think, there is really little substantive difference between living in America and living in Canada. Americans have more freedom, they make more money, and get to keep a lot more of what they make, but apart from that (and the weather) there is just not that big a difference.
